Default Having car painted (Possibly)

A good friend of mine made the suggestion. He is a mechanic, bodywork guy, and paints cars.. I have seen what he does and the paint jobs are amazing. All he would do is charge me for the paint, and can usually get most paint cheaper then the public can. My question is I have Mil Yellow now, I think its an amazing deal if I can get the car painted for what the paint costs me. Im still thinking about it, BUT..

What colors should I look into - pics would also be beneficial.. Thanks!

If it was me, I wouldn't repaint a Corvette to any color other than the original color.

As far as colors to repaint to, it all goes to your personal likes. I saw a graphite color corvette C5 repaint here on the forums that looked really good.

Wow. I wouldn't know where to begin. It would be a great opportunity to change your paint color. Don't you like MY? I think it's sweet. Do you have damage to the MY? Your car looks great. If there isn't a problem and you like the color, why paint it? The color is such a personal preference. If you want to change the color, do it your way.

Sometimes you get what you pay for.

What are you going to do if the end result is less than the high quality you want? What if there are mistakes in the paint? How will you complain since it was done for "free?"

What seems like an amazing deal may turn out to be a nightmare for you. Does your friend have exerience painting Corvettes for picky people? Is he going to take the pieces apart to do a thorough job or just paint the exterior surfaces?

Good luck with your decision...

Orange would be a good color. But, unless he is going to do it right and take all the panels off the car, I would just leave it alone. JMO.

Do it right or dont do it at all. Maybe your friend does to amazing paint jobs. Thats your call. An ok paint job will decrease your cars value unless its a really good job. I would say if you were going to paint it look for colors you like, Cobalt blue and Oriential blue are awesome Kandy colors. HOK makes the best Kandy out there. Just make sure EVERYTHING is taking off and prepped right and expect to be without a car for a long time. Kandy should run around 2-3k retail.

Well thats an interesting proposition for you, because it's free is real attractive, but on the flip side, it may devalue the car,
are you looking at a custom color? or factory color?
If your looking for a fac color, why not look for a different car with the color you want?
If it's somthing custom that would look awesome and stand out then go for it.
I personally wouldn't do it unless I are absolutely comforatable with his work (and seen finished cars), in the end it's whats going to make you happy, it's a big step that cant easily be turned back.
good luck let us know

Hey Mike!

How's it going?

Millenium Yellow is hard to beat, its a beautiful color so you'll have to go with something even better, something not offered by chevrolet. I would suggest lamborghini's Pearl Orange Metallic. Its a gorgeous color that you hardly ever see. It will definitely stand out and make your vette look incredible. Here's what it looks like on a gallardo:

I have seen him restore all types of cars, hes really into that.. He does take everything off and prep or correctly.. hes an **** worker.. But my color is gorgeous and it's not damaged, however, getting an amazing custom paint job at the price I can get it, is a real great offer.. Hes proposed it before and I have turned it down, he knows im picky and hes not the type to take hold of the job if he couldn't handle it and make sure its perfect to both of our likings. I am still very MUCH in the air about what to do. I feel if i saw an amazing color then I might just go for it. But i like to hear all of your opinions. So thanks for whoever gave them!

Hi Mike,

I think MY is a great color and your paint looked real nice. I wouldn't change the paint unless the car really needed painted, but thats me. As Alex says there some nice colors out there that would look good on a vette. I might think of ghost flames or some other accent before repainting. Its your car and you can what you want. Good luck on your decsion.

Mike...I kinda' agree with the others...Repaint (if you need to) to the same factory color. There's an awful lot of detail to a color change.

BTW, not to hijack your post, but "hollyt" here in Warren is just asking
for a body shop/painter in our area.

Maybe you can help her out with a recommendation.

Mike you are getting rid of the MY - OMG - maybe your hot S/O has something to do with it because that would be the only reason I can think of and that is not even a good one!!!

My Opinion...... If your current paint is in fine condition, DON"T DO IT. If yours is full of paint imperfections like scratches, rock chips and the kind, beat up from many road miles, then I'd consider it.

But if I was repainting a Corvette, painting it any other stock color is saying "Tacky" "Tacky".....My Corvette Is Tacky"

I feel the only reason to change colors is to paint it a non-stock color. Since you have Millenium Yellow, I'd investigate a metalic version of it. Still your original stock color, yet one of a kind.

It's not the cost of the paint job, it's the value of your car that will cost you in the end. If you are keeping you car forever disregard this post, if you are going to resell it in the next 10 years it will have a big effect on resale. IMHO

Well I do love the MY i was just pondering and wondered what you guys thought of another color choice if you had the option at a real attractive price ie. only paying for paint. I do trust this site as a correct and thought out place so you guys posting does help me. Its not that i dont like the MY but the thought if getting my car painted ANY color i want kind of made me think.. but your posts have helped me and even my initial thought was a No, and I think Ill stick with it, in a few years if my bumper needs a repaint, I can have him do that.
