Default Coupe...Protect-A-Top

...just got my Mid America Motorworks catalog...page C5-6...for when your top is off, it covers the top and has an “integrated fastening system allows for quick , snug installation in seconds”. ...what’s that mean “for stationary use only”

I guess it’s a new product. Anybody got any info on it?

I believe they're mostly intended as a sun shade to protect your interior from UV rays when parked, on days that you're driving with your targa off. I suppose they could be useful if you didn't bring your targa with you. From what I've read about them, it's sorta used like a full car cover, but just for the open top, rather than the entire car.

I agree - it means that you should not drive the car with this item installed - probably would come off and go flying behind you.

I believe there is something similar available from GM. I remember seeing a like product when at the dealers. I could be mistaken though ( I often am!).

VELCRO

I think thats what they use, but not sure. I had the POrsche type removeable top for the 87 and it bolted in in the back anbd velcro's on the front with a tie around the mirror. I think the one you're talking about just velcros in?

Just for use while parked to keep the sun (and prying eyes) out.

...hmmm...kinda like the targa top when you forget to latch it.

I haven't had the top on mine for weeks...it sits in my garage...perhaps I'll be the guinea pig (and I'm not even Italian).

It's been around for a while. I bought one back in May '04. It is heavy duty padded nylon and covers is basically a little larger that the top so there is some overlap. It is held in place by two rubber suction cups on each end that attach to the side windows.

Obviously, you can't drive with it on. I have not had mine blow off yet, although I'd be a little worried if it stormed or if a heavy wind got under it that it may blow it off.

Only problem I see with the system is the mounting setup. The rubber suction cups attach to the outside of the windows, so you have to pull them off and fold the sides out of the way to open the door. There needs to be straps or something that ties into the front and rear latches to hold it a little tighter in the center. Also, this would help secure it from someone walking off with it as it would take about 2 sec. to pull it off and walk away.

I'm going to see if I can get somone to sew some straps or try to run a bike cable through it. At $130, I don't want to buy another one.
