wednesday night, i noticed some clattering under hard accel and attributed it to my budget minded gas purchase. so i bought a bottle of chevron gas treamtent with techron. well i put it in while cleaning the car up and i know it wasnt leaking before i used it. the fiance and i drove around alot that night. i drove it the next night and smelled gas but couldnt figure out where it was coming from. i drove my neon last night and today i drive the vette again and notice the same gas smell. looking under the car while its running, gas is running out of the left side of the car from the left tank someplace. i havent had a chance to look closely at it but i know its not good. could the gas treatment have cleaned up some gunk aorund a seal and made it leak? where could it be leaking from and more importantly, how hard and expensive is this gonna be?????any help at all will be appreciated.
UPDATE: LOOKS LIKE I FIGURED IT OUT. looking under the car the leak is from the fuel filter. not sure if its the actual outlet in the filter or the connection but thats where its coming from. does anyone know a good price to get one replaced on the early C5's?

Sounds like the filler neck tube area. Seems like I remember a TSB on this issue. I know that other members have posted on here regarding this. It may very well just involve re-positioning the filler neck tube and re-tightening the clamp that may have worked it's way loose. Another sign that the leak may involve the filler neck tube area is the fact that usually the leak will only tend to show up when you have a full (or mostly) full tank. HTH

The Techron thing is pure coincidence in my opinion.
Is it only leaking when the ignition is on? If so it must be in the pressurized part of the system...
yes it leaks only when the engine is on. i havent tried it with just the ignition on w/o enigne running but i agree it is in the pressurized part. it has half a tank in it and had been filled up prior to this a week or so ago. hopin its gonna be something on the cheaper side, all this overtime im working is for my honeymoon and house investments, not the car. maybe its jealous?
oh, and no, no stereo work or anything. hasnt been in the shop since last year for the column lock recall. its been a very good car, very few trips to the shop in 87k miles but who knows. guess it'll be flatbedded to the shop monday. i hate having to tow it but something about leaking fuel and the fact i have already experience a fire in a patrol car at work makes me think my luck would not be too good. any other suggestions? so far it sounds failry inexensive if fuel filler and or fuel filter repairs. hope its not like a sending unit or tank or something...
I agree with you on towing it - I would feel the same as you do. The filler is not part of the pressurized system, and if it were a hole in the tank it would leak as long as the fuel level was above the hole, so I would be looking at the filter or possibly the fuel pump/sender and/or connections to those components. If it is the filter or its connections then it could be a relatively inexpensive fix. However if they have to pull the tank to get at the pump or sender, that increases the cost.
is the filter or its connections etc something i can check easily with some normal tools and jack stands? where is the dang filter anyway? does the metal plate on the bottom of the tank simply unbolt and let me look in at stuff??

As far as i know, the filters for the 97-98's were physically located in the same place as the later years; bolted to the driver's side frame rail forward of the rear axle. It is pretty easy to get at. The 97-98 yr models only have an inlet and an outlet line attached to the filter itself, but if you need to change it for whatever reason you will need one of the (inexpensive) fuel line removal tools to disconnect the "quick-connect" style lines from the filter. The filter is secured to the frame rail with a clamp with one bolt to unfasten. BTW, you have the cheaper version filter as compared to the 99-04 folks since the fuel pressure regulator is built into the later year model filters and makes them more expensive.
Good luck and HTH

also, could it have just crapped out due to not being replaced in 87k miles? ive known cars to run poor etc cause of one clogged just didnt know if it would spring a leak or not. thanks in advance again.
I had to replace my leaking fuel filter on my 97 at 35,000 miles! The filter is on the inner side directly behind the drivers seat. It is easier to see and get too by removing about five bolts that hold a metal pan just above the exhaust system. As I recall the new filter cost less than $15 at the dealer. It is sort of an oblong egg shape with one inlet and one outlet. The OEM is plastic!!!
I wouldn't suggest driving with this leak, since mine was leaking directly above the exhaust!!!!
I think it's about 30 mins labor plus parts - any forum members close that could help a fellow member out? Otherwise he's headed for a flatbed bill.....
sounds cheap enuf. the tow bill aint a big deal, most of it if not all will be covered by my towing coverage from insurance and or cell phone's road side assistance.
just anotehr thought. if any other manufacturer in the world had built a car that had a fuel filter that would start leaking spraying fuel over a hot exaust pipe, it would have been recalled right? nice move GM.
like the outside mirrors that pop loose and decide to spin freely at times. GM says oh well, dodge recalled theirs w/in a few months on the 2002 dodge ram pickups. guess GM still dont like to fess up to boo boo's and wanna help people have a safe car.
