Make sure your hit the Chevy display in Birmingham, it's around 15 mile rd. And more GM stuff at 13 mile road, at the public park there. Behind that park at 13 mile road is some good parking lots to park at for a couple bucks - safe place to keep a nice car. Its on the east side of Woodward, behind all the GM display tents in the park. It makes a nice walk up to Birmingham.
I drive a bit in the morning, real early, then put the vette in that lot at 13 and walk the rest of the day. Bring water, camera, and your best walking shoes.
If you get in a couple days early, there is great cruising is every night that week.
Why would anyone want to drive all that distance just to sit in traffic for days?
It is the worlds largest car show. Check the web site. The travel channel did a nice piece on it a couple of months ago. You can even rent a 60s muscle car to tour Woodward.

The fun of Dream Cruise is not necessarily the driving. It's a lot more fun as a spectator. RutRoe, I suggest you book a hotel room north of the action, like up in Auburn Hills (about 5-10 miles north of the "ending" point of the cruise.) Then drive down the Hwy 75, get off at Big Beaver, head west to Woodward, turn left on Woodward and drive a few miles south into the city of Birmingham. You'll find plenty of parking available in Birmingham, including a couple of public lots where you can stash your car for the whole day. Usually there's a big car show on Old Woodward Ave in Birmingham and one of the big 3 car manufacturers rents out the local city park to host a huge display. Bring a hat, a lawn chair, and find a spot along the sidewalk to hang out for a few hours. You won't regret it!!
Obviously you have never seen photo's nor have you ever been...It's more like 1,000,000+ people. Definitely something for everyone to see once in their life time...And it starts the week before, with cars cruising around woodward.
The week of the cruise is electric with all the displays going up and all street racing on WW that whole week (sorry). It is my favorite time of year without a doubt.
All of the rare/awesome cars sitting in garages all over metro Detroit are out and running. Plus the latest stuff from the OEM performace divisions. Lots of M plates on the ave that week. I live at 11 & WW and every 15 minutes or so you just hear something brake loose at 5,000 RPM. The Woodward Dream Cruise is unlike anything else. Try and make it if possible.
