I am going to replace the headlight gears in my '97 coupe because one is grinding when I turn off the lights. Im trying to figure out if I have the '97-'99 motors with the screw on caps or if they have been replaced before with the '00-'04 sealed variety. The caps are black but I cannot tell if they are plastic or aluminum, and there are 3 bolts around the outside of the cover, but I can't tell if they are actually holding the cap on, or are serving some other purpose. Pics of both kinds of motors would help immensly. Also, how can I tell if my car (A4 tranny) has had the CLB recall performed? If it hasn't, will the dealer do it for free even though the car is not under warranty since it was a recall? Thanks for your help.
GM keeps VIN number records that any dealer can reteive in minutes that will have all the recall work done on a specific vehicle. They don't do the "CLB" on automatics. They actually remove a part from the steering column and replace it with one that prevents the locking tang from having anything to lock into. You can find out by removing your key and then trying to turn the steering wheel. It will be hard to turn unless you have the front tires jacked off the ground, but if you can turn it, your home free. Try for one complete revolution of the steering wheel. If you can go all the way around with no 'click' followed by the wheel being immobilised, fine!
He has a detailed discussion on the covers that will help you. I have seen pictures of both types and its prety clear if the cover plate has 3 small screws to hold it in place or not. Good luck, and thanks for your service in that 'work vehicle'!

solved headlight motor issue. Much more apparent in the daylight. But as far as the CLB goes, is there something I can look for on my car to see if its installed?
