Just looking through the forum like I usually do and decided to write this quick post because I am very excited. I have reached the 75% point of my savings and have set the date of July 15th to begin my official search/purchase of my next corvette; a 2003 Black Z06. So, my question to you out there, mainly Californians, what should I expect to pay in taxes, percentage wise? I am trying to figure out a final "out the door" price. I was thinking a $35K car with taxes would be $38K. Is that about right or am I off by a lot? Thanks!

On average, CA tax is around 8%, then there is the Registration.. I just registered my 02 Z, cost $300.. but the 03 will cost more... $35k for an 03 Z06 is a bit low... unless you get super high mileage... but that would be hard to find on an 03... expect more like $38k+ in CA...
here are some numbers.. to give you an idea.. using 8% sales tax.. some areas are more, some less
One thing to keep in mind.. if purchasing from out of state... you pay tax when bringing it to CA... if you pay tax in that state, lets say 7%.. and the tax where you live is 8%.. then when you register in CA, you have to pay the 1% difference to CA DMV.. but the opposite is not true.. if you pay 9% in other state, when you come to CA DMV where tax is 8%, you do not get anything back. The gubmn't taketh, but they surely don't giveth!
Make sure if you buy out of state, its stock... you need it to pass smog, so you can get it registered...
Also, if you buy from private person, you pay the tax rate in your home town, where you register it.. if you buy it from a dealer, you pay tax there, and you will have to pay the local tax rate... could be good or bad depending on what your rate is
I bought my car in Texas and registered it there then had it shipped to Cali. Saved me thousands of dollars. But I don't believe you could do that.
Nice choice in year and color on your future Z06.
Most states will not charge you sales tax if you are buying the car to register in another state. You only have to pay the tax in the state where you are going to register the car. I have purchased 4 cars out of state from dealers and private parties and have never had to pay the sales tax in the state the car came from.

Unless CA has changed in the last 2 years, you pay sales/use tax based on the county in which the car will be registered. So example, you buy the car in LA county 8.25% sales tax, live in Orange County, 7.75% sales tax, you pay the 7.75%. Doesn't matter if it's private party or dealer.

If you buy a car in Arizona, and drive it off the lot, meaning you are not shipping it... you must pay AZ tax. I don't kow how it works in other states. I was under the assumption of what you said, you just pay tax when you get it home, which would have saved me money, since my home rate was 7.25, and AZ was 8.2
