Default Steering Column lock revisited

Searched the forum and couldn't find anyway to unlock the steering column lock myself. Had problems with my 99 6 speed in 1999 before the recall, dealer fixed the problem then no charge. Took it in for unrelated problem in March 05 and they apparently re-did the recall and now it's screwed. Any help, besides calling the dealer names, would be appreciated. Paul

The recall doesn't fix the problem. THe only real, proven way to do it is to buy the Column Lock Bypass and take 5 mins to install. You won't have to give it another thought after that.

Tons of posts on the CL issue and the bypass. Do a Search

PS: You didn't say how "its screwed." So....my info may not be correct given your circumstance. If they screwed it up, then they should fix it. If it's continuing to lock....get the CLB. Hows it screwing up?

You cant re-do the recall, and besides, the recall does not prevent column lock failure on the M6...Call GM names, not the dealer, then get the bypass

All I know is that I didn't have a problem with the lock for 5 years until the dealer " fixed" it again. After yanking on the steering wheel it finally came unlocked and I just bought the CLB from Thunder to install it myself. I won't even think about driving it until that's done. Thanks for the help. Mine was fixed 2 years ago. So far so good...but what happened to Paul makes me think twice before having to go to the dealer for anything.

It doesn't really fix the problem, because the lock is still there. It just makes the problem much less likely to happen.

Default Steering column lock

Please help I have a 1997 with a locked steering column. Is there any way to move the vehicle without having it towed to the dealer. I need to move it several miles so I can work on it personally. There must be a way. The dealer does it. I have scanned the entire thread. All indicates that the dealer has the fix. How can I move the car so that I can fix the car myself and avoid all the horror stories I see here.
Thanks for the help.

VMI07, there are a lot of posts on this topic if you search.

What always worked for me was to run the air on high for about 10 minutes. Then after banging the steering wheel back and forth, the lock would eventually disengage.

If you do get it disengaged, immediately put in a CLB so the computer doesn't tell it to lock back. Also, make sure you use the power cable that comes with it to fully disengage the lock. There was a member that posted here that didn't do that, and he had his lock-up the next time he drove the car. I did that, but mine still locked-up once. That's only happened once since last August, but I'm still scared.

Default Desperate

I can't thank you enough and I canot believe the amount of information on this site. I hope one day to improve my knowledge C5 to help others. I am a one time c3 owner then had children and had to take a break. I'm back with a c5 and have loved it for 10 months and then this. What is most difficult for me to believe is that there appears to be no solution to this problem other than beating the steering column to death. Seems to me that there should be some way that once you get to the lock itself that providing power to the lock assemble should disengage the devise. What I need is a good thief. I'm sure they have an answer.

thansk again.

Success!!!! I took the advice found here and shook the @#!#$%$% out of the wheel. It worked. I did shake the wheel forward and back with the motor on not side to side.

Thanks all. Its off to the dealer for the recall.

I have found that if you remove the key for ten seconds, then put the key back in and while its in the OFF position HOLD the steering wheel very hard to the RIGHT and turn the key to the ON position, works everytime! I have the CLB and am installing it tomorrow! Good Luck@
