Just bought a 2002 Vert with 2800 miles, It has a clean car fax but it seems like the steering wheel has about a half inch of play when your going down the highway, it drives nice ,doesn't sway or wander around on the road. It just seemed my 2000 was tighter steering then this..
I actually run toe out as my car is 50% track, and it will drive like you describe...light, because each tire is hunting a slightly different path when driving straight. Good news is once you do turn the wheel it turns in IMMEDIATELY, but there is more play around center.
I had the same problem after a shop installed my headers. The steering wheel would move a half an inch in both directions before the wheels would move.
Turns out in was a loose bolt on the steering shaft. Hopefully this will fix your problem.
