Does anyone know anything about this stuff? Says 15000 mile/1 year change, Advanced SuperSyn System, Fully Synthetic, Meets ACEA A1/A5,B1/B5, API SL,CF. Cost a buck more a quart. Gold cap, bla bla bla. I did a search with no results.
The problem that I have with a 15,000/ 1 yr. oil change is the oil filter issue. Even if you could buy an oil which has those superior lubricating characteristics, the filter would only be able to do its' job for so long before it became the "weak link" in the chain. If you're going to change the filter, you may as well change the oil as well while under the car.
This is what is in the OM for an 04, it states nothing about mileage unless you reset it by accident, as it is a poor indicator for when to change your oil.
(
GM Oil Life System)
Your vehicle has a computer that lets you know when to
change your engine oil and filter. This is based on
engine revolutions and engine temperature, and not on
mileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at
which an oil change will be indicated can vary
considerably. For the oil life system to work properly,
you must reset the system every time the oil is changed.
When the system has calculated that oil life has been
diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is necessary.
A CHANGE OIL SOON message will come on. Change
your oil as soon as possible within the next two times you
stop for fuel. It is possible that, if you are driving under the
best conditions, the oil life system may not indicate that
an oil change is necessary for over a year. However, your
engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year
and at this time the system must be reset. Your dealer
has GM-trained service people who will perform this work
using genuine GM parts and reset the system. It is also
important to check your oil regularly and keep it at the
proper level.
If the system is ever reset accidentally, you must
change your oil at 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since your
last oil change. Remember to reset the oil life system
whenever the oil is changed.

Like I said, does anyone know anything about this Advanced SuperSyn System. It states on the bottle that it's good for 15,000 miles OR 1 year, whatever comes first. Mobil web site says it has higher levels of SuperSyn additive, detergent additives and higher levels of antiwear additives than the current Moble1. Anyone? Comments welcome!
After looking at Mobil's web site I can only deduce that this has got to be better than the current Mobil1 10w30 ? ? ? Higher levels of antiwear additives? Thats what caught MY eye! Also, is any 10w30 considered energy conserving?
Mobil 1 has three new high milage change oils out. The 5,000, the 7,500, and the 15,000. The 5,000 is dyno oil. The 7,500 is a blend. The 15,000 is a fully synth that appears to be the standard Mobil 1 synth with additional additives.
I will stick with the standard Mobil 1 synth for my '04 since they say that it is for cars that are under warranty and that is the factory fill.
You live in Illinois and you'd leave a 10W-30 in there year 'round? Uh-uh, I'd stick with the regular Mobil 1 synthetic 5W-30 if I were in your shoes (or area of the country).
I've heard the new ones are a blend and not fully synthetic, I don't know if that is true.
Mobil 1 and the Mobil 1 Extended Performance are definitely full synthetic oils. The Mobil 5000 and Mobil 7500 are the blends (with the 7500 containing a higher % of synthetic than the 5000). None of the Mobil oils are complete dino oils anymore, even their 5000 contains a small amount of synthetic in it's base oil.

Obviously something was given up in exchange for longer life.
I agree The biggest issue to me is the fact that these new oil formulations do not meet GM 4718M.
Allow me to play devil advocate for a minute - let's say you have an engine failure and you wind up trying to claim it under warranty. GM performs an analysis of your oil and discovers that the oil doesn't meet the spec - GM 4718M.....what do you think is going to happen?
Call me crazy or stupid, but I don't want to provide an easy out for a warranty claim. But as we are so fond of saying around here - it's your car do what makes you happy.
Actually im going to change my oil tonight using it, but I still change my oil and filter every 3K miles regardless. I have been using Mobile 1 full synthetic for the past few years. Our Evo also calls for the use of Mobile 1 fully synthetic only. The way I look at it, is if I dont have the time to do the change right at 3K it buys me a small window
