Sorry if this is a dupe - there is so much info about column lock that I could not peruse it all before posting.
I do not have a CLB, so I occasionally have to perform the hard right turn maneuver with simultaneous key turn to get past "Pull key, wait 10 seconds." Once in a while I screw this up and the situation degrades to "Service Column Lock."
I've discovered that disconnecting the negative battery cable for a few minutes and draining electical reserves (tap brake pedal) will cause the car to forget about servicing the column lock and it will revert to "pull key."
Hope this helps somebody. And yes, I will break down and buy a CLB if I don't get a new Z06 first.
Call your local dealer and see if the recall is in on your vVIN, when I went to get my new key pad programmed, it was in the system, but I went through thunderracing.com and got the CLB kit for $50 and it is done and over with.

He has a Z06, the recall will not fix the problem.
The recall for the manual trannys (Z06 included) only reprograms the fuel to shut off if the column lock fails. It does nothing to prevent the malfunction of the steering lock. Sure they say they check the alignment of the pin but they do not perform the same fix as they do on the autos. The autos have the lock completely disabled as they still have the trans lock for a theft deterrent unlike the manuals.
WWK888, that is good information, I had no idea. JN Chevrolet was the dealership I was referring to, BTW.
Not a big fan of the sales staff at times, but I can't complain with the guy that helps me out in parts and service. Of course, I don't do anything major there in the service department, because my 2000 has been running so good!
I was under the impression the Z06 did not have the locking column feature. I work with a guy with a Z16 and he never received the recall for CLB. Checked his car the other day and steering wheel did not lock with the key off.
Do Z06's have it or not?

The Z06 has the column lock feature. I have seen the service column lock screen several times now, mostly after low voltage on the battery.

They definately have it. They discontinued the locking device in the steering only on the autos. By the way, CLB stands for Column Lock Bypass kit and it is an aftermarket product, therefore there is no recall for the CLB. GM has a recall for the ECL (Electric Column Lock). Is your friend the original owner of his car? Maybe the CLB was installed by the previous owner...
Yes he is the original owner. Maybe I didn't turn it enough to engage the lock, but he claims he never has received the CL recall. I, on the other hand, have received about 4 or 5 notices which I simply ignore since I installed the CLB last weekend.
Wonder why he's not been notified.
