And nope, it's not the kind from eating too much Tex-Mex. The last couple of days my '04 coupe has had a strong gasoline odor. It diminishes after the tank gets to half-empty and gets stronger after it's been filled.
Anyone else experience this or have any ideas as to the cause?

this sounds like it could be serious - the tank system straddles the exhaust system so you need to proceed careful - I am not sure I would start the car until I knew what the problem was. It could be a leak in the tank, filler tube or possibly in one of the fuel lines. The most basic questions are are you filling the tank right to the top and is the cap tight?
Try to isolate the source from outside the car, and while the car is off and cool. Try to see if it in the front or rear, left or right - that kind of thing. Then visually explore that area looking for signs of a leak. Gas can evaporate making it difficult to find.
It is also possible that a leak is in the pressurized part of the system, and if so you may only locate a leak when the fuel pump has pressurized it.
Be careful!

It's just a thought, but I read here once where someone was attaching something to the the area behind the seats somewhere with some screws, and he was warned that there was a gas tank he should be aware of.
Could it be that you put to much gas in your car? It might be pissible if you do fill it completely full that you have a little run off, not on the outside of the car but one inside of the gas tank area that could be leaking down into your door jam some how and that could be where your getting the intense smell. Hope it could be something that simple but who knows. Definately would check out all possibilities. Hope your not a smoker!!!!!!! Good luck finding out what's wrong....
I had a problem similar to this... Really strong odor after fill-up and then it went away shortly thereafter. Turned out to be the transfer tube (not sure of actual name of it) between the two tanks. Be very careful, the way I finally figured out how bad it was, was that after I filled up I happened to pull the car forward before going in to pay and noticed a huge puddle of gas under the car. Thats when I knew it was more than just a loose gas cap. Not sure if this is what is wrong with yours but it sounds like it could be. It took two shops and the service department before anybody actually found the problem.

I had the same problem on my 04....the stealership replace driver side tank; connection hose and the filler hose. You're not alone on this problem. Looks like it's a problem for some 04 model equip with 05 gas tank.
Is this thing safe to drive to the dealership??? Gas is puddling right in front of the left rear tire.
Thanks!
That's exactly where the fuel filter is located. Since it's an '04 it has to be under warranty even for a defective fuel filter. The tow will be on the General, let them come out and flat bed [roll back] it to the dealership.
I had the same thing on my 97 a few weeks back. The fuel filter leaked. Problem solved.
UR lucky. My leak was at the passenger side sending unit gasket. Stealer cost me over $500. to repair it. Come to find out that was one of the '97 defects and a recall repair up to a certain VIN#. Mine was beyond that VIN#. My $.02
