Default help, what diff do I have

I have a used 01. I have bought a set of 3:42 gears but am wondering the best way to tell what is in the car now. How can I tell if I have stock gearing? Is there somewhere to look on the diff or do I measure RPM's. If so what rpms for 2:78, 3:15 etc. Thanks in advance for any help.

Two ways, one is get under the back end and check, they will tell you right on the gear box if they're 3.15 or 2.73.
Also on the inside of the glove box are a bunch of codes. the G92 code are the 3.15's, if you dont' have that you have the 2.73.

If your car is 6spd then you have a 3.42

You could check the code in the glovebox, but that won't help if a previous owner changed them out to something different.

The best way to be absolutely sure what you have with an A4 is to place the gearshift in 3rd (drive won't work for this) and accelerate to 75 mph and hold there. If you are taching 2730 rpm you have the 2.73, if 3150 rpm you have the 3.15, if 3420 rpm you have 3.42, etc.

Also works in 4th on the MN6 - the key is to be in the gear that gives you a 1:1 ratio.
