Default Help a C2 driver

I need some assistance from the C5 section:

I presently own a C2 (1966), but would like to add a C5 to the mix for more daily driving. Looking to purchase a Silver, Red, or Blue 6 speed coupe in the next 6 months, so trying to learn more about these years.

Are there differences in the years for the C5, minor body style changes, different options, etc.? (Ex. for the C2’s 1963, split window, 1964 solid back window).

Thank you for your help and assistance,
Jeff

Hi, unlike the C2's, there are no body differences within the C5 years. Options?, well that's another story. The later years are chocked full of various electronic options, with HUD and Active Handling being the 2 biggies.
The 97 and 98 have a return fuel line and the other years have a single line.
The 97 and 98 have a 'passive' lock feature on the key fobs, the others don't.
I believe the 2000 and later dropped the wagon style wheels.

I have a 98 nad find it to be reliable, but as with all other generations, the later in the generation, the more reliable they tend to become, but... with the caveat, that the later C5's have more electonics and are somewhat more prone to electronic funkiness.

There is a start for you, others will no doubt add more info.

Good Luck

97 - First Year - Coupe only 345hp
98 - Vert available
99 - Fixed Roof Coupe available
00 - HP increase to 350hp - Thin spoke wheels replace wagon wheels
01 - Z06 (based on Fixed Roof Coupe) becomes available 385hp
02 - Z06 goes to 405hp - HUD standard on all models
03 - 50th Anniversary models available (Coupe & Vert)
04 - Last year of C5 - Commemorative Editions available in all 3 models (Lemans Blue)

Here are a couple of things off the top of my head. I have an 01 Z06, which I love. Has more HP than the Coupe or Vert, different suspension, different 6 spd, different rear end, the list goes on. Downside is that the roof is fixed. For me, that wasn't an issue. I actually prefer the fixed roof...less leaks. I came from a 93 C4 to the C5. It is a great vehicle!

Just wanted to say Good luck on your search/purchase You'll love it.

Along with the great things about the C5's ... I think it fair to share some of the "rain" you could encounter. It's a great car, but if I didn't list this, I'd feel like I did you a dis-service. - Dave Q.

Here's another member's list:

"Here goes the list of common big ticket problems:

1. Some 2000-2001 C5 had an oil consumption problem due to bad rings.
This had something to do with light tension oil control rings and when way the person drove his car. High RPM and light load combinations. This caused ring flutter and excessive oil usage.
2. Rear end output shaft seal leaks.
3. Clutch slippage. If the car was run hard it will need to be replaced!
4. Steering wheel column lock problems. Column lock bypass kit will fix the problem around $45-50. Bucks if it is not already installed.
5. Battery acid leak problems from original AC Delco battery. Destroys wiring harness, PCM and vacuum lines under the battery. Costly!!!
6. Wet carpets due to AC air box drains plugging up.
7. Windshield cowl drains clogging up causing wiper motor to fail! Easy fix if you catch it prior to destroying the wiper motor!!!
8. Drivers seat tracks wear causing the seat to rock when you accelerate or brake.
9. Emergency flasher switch failure. Expensive part! Very expensive labor to replace it!!
10. Right and left door control electronic module failures.
11. Head light motor (stripped plastic driven gear) "just like the C4"). Same fix, replace with brass!
12. Tire pressure sensor module failures.
13. Head light motor control module failures.
14. Driver seat leather wear on the seat back outboard bolsters.

I have given you 14 of the problems that you see a lot of on the forum. I have only seen 2,3,4, 6,7 and 8 happen to me, but I would not give my car up for NOTHING!

There are ways that you can check to see what service and or repairs have been done to most cars."

I just don't think the HUD is standard.

these are some of the key differences, I am sure more will chime in....I think the HUD became standard in 01.

Don't know if you are considering an Automatic (A4) or a 6 speed. One other important thing I think is the gear selection on C5's. A 342 rear-end was standard on all 6 speed, the A4 came with a 273 rear end, or the optional performance rear end 315 gear (option code G92 I believe).

Good luck with your selection.

HUD became standard on Coupes and Verts in 01. All models in 02 (including Z06). I should have clarified it a little more.

I think most of the major points have been mentioned. My advise from a c-2 owner as well is to buy as new as possible and to remember all c-5s are not treated the same.

Nope - HUD was always an option on '99+ coupe & 'vert C5's. It became part of the 1SC option package in 2001. It came as standard equipment on 2002+ Z06's, but was not available, even as an option, on 2001 Z06.

Looks like your questions are pretty much answered, so I'll just add good luck in your search for a C5. They are great cars.

Thanks to all for your help,

The search for a low mile, well cared for, mostly unmodded 6 speed coupe begins. (probably a 2000 for the prices I have seen)
