On the driver's side of the tranny just above the driver's side gas tank. The pic below is looking towards the front of the car when we pulled the drivetrain out of a '98. The filter is the black cylinder in the top left just under the black crossover tube.
And, no, you don't have to pull the drivetrain to get to it.

Is it the same for an 02 coupe, I need to replace mine and was wondering if it' something I can do easily, or better to pay a local mechanic who I know well.
Those filters are like $75 bucks.

Same place on an '02 but looks a little different. Only hard part is keeping from getting gas all over when you disconnect the lines. Have plenty of rags on hand and wear eye protection.
