Registration question?
I picked a 02 Z06 yesterday. The car was not financed and the seller wants me to fill in whatever price I want in the transfer form. If I put down something like 5k on both, the Release of Liability and Transfer of Title, will the DMV care? or will they force me pay taxes on the blue book value? How does it work? State is California.

Fudging that much is too much, Sure to raise a red flag...Taxes are fact of life, no one likes it. But buying in another state is not the answer, it happens all the time...When you but a car and are not resident of that state, you simply don't pay THAT state, But...When you register the car in your state, THAT's when you pay (new or used car) On a situation like yours, you can get away with something reasonable...But $5,000.....That's like saying "Helloooo...Look at me!". My take is "don't ask for trouble"

Vehicle tax and registration laws and rules vary considerably among the states. Folks within your state can probably better address your questions/concerns here and you might want to post this over in the Pacific regional section of the Forum. Some of the CA folks who hang out there may seldom make it here to C5 General. Good luck.

I used to "fudge" the purchase price on private owner deals, but it is no longer possible in Washington state. They charge taxes on the book value unless you have documented proof of wrecked condition. They have special books for the registrars of "collector and special interest vehicles" also, so you can't even sneak an old one through. I have actually paid taxes on a higher value than I truly paid for the car rather than go through the hassle of notarized statements and inspection reports on older classics.

haha I wish! No, I paid for 32.5k for it.
Guys, I'm not trying to cheat the tax system. I've purschased plenty of cars and I have no problem paying taxes on a brand NEW vehicle but to keep taxing the same vehicle over and over on change of hands is a bit much.

Let's see. I've never complained about income taxes or bonus taxes and the special tax bracket for bonuses. When I complain about something obviously unfair, don't give me the "holier than thou" crap. If you feel that paying sales tax on the same vehicle over and over is a good deal, then by all means, help out your local DMV and buy a 50K car each month and sell it. They'll love you plenty and you'll make up for all of us, trying to "screw" them over.
