First check the isolator built into the upper shifter shaft to make sure it hasn't come loose from the lower shaft. A loose isolator will make the shifter feel rubbery and can allow the shift **** to spin around. Here's a pic looking under the upper shaft towards the isolator.
Next, pull the isolator shield off the console and check it for cracks/damage. Inspect the rubber donut at the base of the shifter shaft to see if it's damaged. If it is, it could cause sloppiness in the shifter as well. Here's what it looks like.
If all's well up to this point, check the shift rod coupler clamp at the back of the main shifter base. If it's loose, the shifter is not properly actuating the shift rod that's attached to the coupler and is a definite problem. Finally unbolt the 4 shifter bolts that hold it to it's base and check the hard plastic bushing that is attached to the bottom ball end of the shifter shaft. Verify that it isn't damaged or even missing. That is an important component to accurate shifting as well. (Remember that you'll need a new gasket or some gasket in a tube to reinstall the shifter as shown at the link above.)
If all else fails, perform the shifter adjustment assembly as detailed in the service manual (or email me and I'll send it to you).
