This has been written about before, in this forum and at least one other. It still happens on occasion on my first drive of the day, and always within the first mile of travel. For a while it seemed the thump, pop, thud, oil canning or whatever you want to call it happened 7 out 10 times on the first drive of the day. As others on this forum have mentioned it is never more than that one time in a day, but let the car sit for a day or two, and you likely will be plagued with it again. For a while it seemed to disappear, but came back to haunt me late last week. I've had the car on a lift for the CAGS by-pass install, but couldn't find any evidence of what it might be. Perhaps a month after I bought the car I was at the dealership for some minor warranty work and asked the maintenance guru what he thought might be the cause. Unfortunately (for me) it was not an issue they were famliar with nor did their data base seem to have any info either.
So I thought why not give the GM Owners Center a chance to earn their wings. Emailed them a couple of days back describing the condition etc., etc., and darned if I didn't get a call from one of their reps last night. We spoke for perhaps 5 minutes and at the end of the call he committed to calling me back this coming Thursday.
So whatever I find out, I'll post. Probably won't be earth shattering, but ya never know.
In the meantime, has anyone out there been able to pin it down?????
I would look at the exhaust system and make sure it's not hitting against something. If that looks OK, then I would check out the drive line. Do you think it would do it on a chassis dyno? That way you can look for it while the drive line is in motion safely. Also check your shocks.
It's hard to say without hearing it myself. But I would look at the exhaust system and make sure it's not hitting against something and that all the hangers are OK. If that looks OK, then I would check out the drive line. Do you think it would do it on a chassis dyno? That way you can look for it while the drive line is in motion safely. Also check your shocks.
Please PM me when you hear back from GM. I've had the same problem and no one has been able to pinpoint it. Right now it's been in quiet mode for a few months but it always comes back. Thanks...
Glad to see I'm not the only one. I've been told that it may be the partition behind the seats flexing. I'm not complete sold on this explanation but the sound I hear is consistent with what I think this should sound like. There's no metalic sound like something banging, just a big WHUMP and that's it.
BTW, I have an 04 coupe. I don't know if this is something from all years and models or something specific to later cars.
i think i found the thump noise from the right rear. This noise has driven me crazy for awhile. i removed my right rear rotor (parking brake), i saw all kinds of brake dust where the parking brake pads are. i cleaned out the rotor and parking brake assembly.....no more thump! Yet!
This fix may work on the f-body's as well...........
