call me jaded but i belong to the if-the-car's-open-some-jerk-will-mess-with-it school of thought. do any of the above & consider cocking the wheel a turn to either side. it's a shame that people don't leave their hands off things that do not concern them. bub

This time, I did check and the car was still locked. BUT, when you think about it, what is there to stop some jerk from taking the car out of gear and releasing the e-brake and sending the car off with a nudge??? I know in the past I may have parked with the top off here and there but this little episode has changed that!!!
I say it was either tampered with or not completely in gear (I've had mine pop out of gear a few times. Felt like it was in gear but it wasn't all the way.) Also you should be engaging reverse while the engine is running and the tranny is turning, otherwise depending on where the shafts stop it may not let you completely engage a gear. What I mean is let the clutch out in neutral while running, depress clutch, hit reverse, shut it down (assuming you didn't just back in somewhere and engage the gear.)
The car has synchros in reverse which requires the tranny to be turning to function.
We have PARKING BRAKES and in no way should anyone of us ever count on using it as a typical EMERGENCY BRAKE or will be disappointed in it's performance as such.
I too leave the trans in 1st if on a rear incline and reverse if a forward incline. With the car in gear like this I do not think it is remotely possible to have the car move in the opposite direction where I am not so sure if I leave the car in reverse on a reverse incline that the car would not move.
Anyway it is VERY difficult to put the car in reverse without the engine on and so depending on if your attempt at putting into reverse was with engine off you could have very well have put it into 5th by accident.
So glad though that no one was injured and there is no probable damage to your ride. Turning your wheels in the opposite direction as a just-in-case is not a bad idea either.
There is now way your car could have rolled if it was truly in gear!! Next time before you shut off the engine slowly let the clutch out untill the car starts to kreep, then shut it off and set the brake. mine will do the same thing in 1st gear. Many times at a light I have shifted to first only to find when I let the clutch out that it wasnt all the way in gear.

So it could have rolled backwards 20 yards on a very slight incline if it was indeed in 5th and not reverse and the brake was all the way up????
Back in the days, many of us had cars that needed "pushed off" from time to time. Put the car in a high gear and it is easy to turn the engine; a low gear will put your friends noses against the trunk!
If the brake was not holding firm and you were in 5th... in my opinion it would roll on a pretty mild incline.

That explains it, all I would ever do sometimes is pull into a parking spot- turn off the car and then go over to reverse as I pull up the e-brake. Now I am actually creeping into reverse with the car on after I pull in and with the e-brake on until it catches... I guess I made it to reverse- not 5th but the tranny did not engage the gear as you stated above... Thanks for the great info!
.
I grew up in upstate NY and if the EB got wet and froze in the winter time, your were out of luck as far as travel so I leaned never to set it.
Hope everything turns out OK.
Me too! Its has become a habit in every car except the 'vette. The hand barke location in the vette makes all the difference. I NEVER use those foot brake thingies and freezing is highly unlikley in Phoenix. I also agree that some one diddled with the car. I remember driving really old iron that lacked enough compression to hold on a hill - used a brick behind the wheel. I drive better cars today. (lol)
