When I open the hood of my 99 after a ride, the latches on the air filter have popped open. Anyone else having this problem?
Yes...I fixed it by bending each metal strap with pliers a few inches above the plastic latches. They haven't popped loose in months. Let me know if you need more info
I had this problem after I installed a K&N filter. I removed the air box assembly from the airfilter to the throttle body. I re-assembled everything
on the bench. It has not unlatched yet.

If you put the seal from the K&N on the inside of the lid, it will seal up nicely and create tension on the latches and they will stay latced. You can buy automotive weatherstrip tape and use it for a seal also and it will work out great, you just have to trim it up nice.
My '97 was doing the same thing when I bought it last year. I finally pulled the entire box and took it apart and reassembled it. I have not had the problem since.

If you want to fix your flying latches bend the metal straps I did the airbox mod, installed a K&N filter with foam gasket...latches popped...someone on CF advised me to bend the straps, I did, no more flying latches.
OK, I read everyones advice. I used jawzforlife's method except with a double layer of velcro under the strap ( 1 inch long x 3/8 inch wide). It worked. If someone can tell me how to post a picture, I will.

This is what worked for me also. I have a 2000 and I installed a k&n with a z06 airbox. When I was trying to install the z06 airbox, the straps kept coming apart. Finally, I read on the forum that you should pull the box out and assemble the whole filter assembly before you re-install the unit back in the car. I believe the easiest and best way is to fix your problem. I have not had any problems! Good luck
I've been meaning to post this problem also. The last time I took my filter out I couldn't get the metal straps to catch at the bottom. With the hood hinging at the front, this is such a pain.

That's the ticket! Made me crazy until I really got a good look at how it went back together (not like I originally thought). Only after I pulled the whole thing out, did I understand.
