I live literally just a few miles from this intersection and it has issues. This man was trying to cross two lanes to go left on one of the opposing 2-into-4 lanes (6 lanes of traffic right at this point). Also, coldwater has a 40 mph limit, dupont has a 45 mph limit, so traffic is moving pretty good. When they say high rate of speed, my guess is that 45-50 would seem to be a high rate, and when you take a 3600-3800 vehicle and slam it at 45 mph into the side of a car, not much is going to help you. The seat belt would have kept him in the car, but I expect there would have been long term trauma and possible permanent disabilities of some sort.
If I want to go south out of the drugstore, I take the other exit onto dupont, and then use the left turn lane at the light. They really need to extend the median so that you cannot make a left out of the other exit. Even if you make it across the two lanes, you still have to contend with the two straight/two turn lanes on the other side.
Here is the map of the intersection a few years ago, it is wider now, and visibility worse.
... punishment for DUI is not strict enough in this country... 5 years in prison, no chance of release until 5 years, would probably deter most people... But this country is too pussified to do something like that, even though drunk driving kills 17,000 people each year..
If we locked up all people for all the crimes they commit ... we would have to pay another 15% in state taxes. The prisons are in rotation of releasing prisoners early to make room for new ones. It's mostly a problem of space. Convince tax payers to pay for more prisons.
There is also the social issue of an income earner for a household with kids being in jail. Then the state may also have to help support the rest of the family through state aid.
On the surface it may look like a simple solution, but it's not. And what the heck is wrong with the no seat belt guy
Some thing that I have noticed... Is that it's the older guys that are dying while in accidents with no seat belts . Seems like the younger crowd wears them... even while drunk (must be a habit if they buckle up with only half the brain cells functioning).
Keep in mind... Wearing a seat belt, is for protection from the other idiots on the streets. If you think there are no idiots driving, then just continue to not wear your seat belts.
I'm sure there are some family members that are going to be pretty upset that he was not wearing his belt. Even though the accident may not have been his fault... It is very likely that he's not here anymore, is his own fault. People have been pulled out of cars that look like a ball of aluminum foil able to have full recovery of their injuries... because of using proper restraints.
