Default New Vette Owner

Well just wanted to say hello. I will be trading in my 99 Z28 tomorrow for a 99 FRC Corvette. I am new to Vettes but not to the LS1. I do have a couple of questions for you guys.

1) The dealer said the steering wheel locked while it was there so tomorrow they are going to have it taken to Chevy and have the recall done. I did read the sticky in the tech forum and was a little confused. Is it ok that they are taking it to chevy and having the recall done? I know i will have to buy the bypass part when i get the vette. Should i be worried about anything when i get it back?

2) A friend of mine owned this vette before it was traded in thats why i am getting it i know everything it has and everything its been through, my question is he had put a Magnaflow off road X-pipe on it with stock manifolds, i was wondering if that X-pipe will work with Long tube headers later on down the road when i get them. Or am i going to have to buy a knew x-pipe?

3) Is the Blackwing filter rechargeable like the K&N?

4) What does a 99 six speed vette usually dyno?
Mods: Blackwing, Magnaflow off road X, Borla straight pipes, Ported TB.

Well any help would be apprciated. Thats all the questions i have now i will probably have more once i get the car. Thanks

One more question for now. What year did they start putting the LS6 intakes on the Vettes? I know for the F-bodies it was 2001. Is it the same for the vettes?

Congrats on the Vette and welcome to the forum. You're at home now.

Rumor has it that yes, it was 2001 for the LS6 intakes.

If it's locked and won't unlock and it's a 6 speed they may have to replace the CL. That's expensive let them do it. Once you get it I'd keep my mouth shut!!! If it still locks and unlocks when you get it back buy the CLB and install it before it locks up again. That is if they don't replace it but get it working again without replacing it. Install the CLB in any case. Or it will lock up again at some point in time. Good luck with it and This is a great place to learn about your car. And you'll like the people here too. They are the greatest.

Sounds good to me i am glad you told me that because there for awhile i was thinking of telling them just to leave it alone but i did decide to have them do the recall. Now my question is how will i know if they did it and will that stupid messege still be there when i get it back "service lock?" Well thanks again for all the welcomes.

First of all...welcome to the world of 'Vettes, it's nice to have you join us!

1. I have a 2001 A4, and that model/year was not involved in the recall, so I can't be of much help except to say...do a search...there is much on this subject here.

2. I would imagine the shop will be able to make it work for you.

3. The Blackwing is a better filter overall, than a K&N, IMHO, and can be reused after a factory recommended cleaning with the right solvent.

4. Most '99's I've heard of, dyno around 295, 305 maybe...stock? You'll have to see for your self on that particular car and it's mods. IMO a lot depends on mileage vs. current compression, and possibly some other variables, not the least of which is the weather. Good luck on that.

5. Yes, it was 2001 on the LS6 manifold upgrade. Same for 'vettes as for F bodys, from what I've heard.

Congrats on your new 'Vette purchase...and besure to keep us informed of your mod activities...oh, and like someone else said...don't forget to wave at the other 'Vettes whenever you see them!!!

Do the column lock bypass as soon as you can, they still lock even after the recall.

Blackwing has a cleaning/re-oiling kit.

The column lock bypass is a must. Get it ASAP.

Welcome

Congrats on the new ride. A Blackwing is easy to clean just buy the kit and you will be fine. As for the X-pipe you should be all right with that one, but you may want to ask when buying the headers.
