Driving to work (because I DON'T want to have a beatiful car & not drive it), and managed to find something in the road when changing lanes. Hear it kick up on the passenger's side, hit pretty hard. I prayed the rest of the way to work that it hit underneith, but found a large mark on the rocker panel (below the door)!!!
Again, I don't want a trailer queen because I bought it to drive it (not JUST to look at). BUT - I want it to look good. This wouldn't have happened in my daily POS driver.
I just got the front end repainted from the previous owner's hitting too many curb stops!
I have an area about 1 in square, where the paint is entirely gone! It just looks white. What can I get done, short of getting the entire rocker panel painted? It seems like it a couple hundred everytime I turn around.
Frb, I feel your pain. I seem to be in almost the exact situation as you, to include the front needing to be repainted due to previous owner hitting curb stops, as well as a nice 'ding' from a rock coming up and hitting the passenger side rocker- down to the 'white'!
How much did the front end repaint set you back? I'm hoping that touch up paint might take care of my passenger side rocker...
Rocker below the door is bad but it could be in a much more noticable place. Some touch up paint may help until you get it painted properly. I had a chip on the door edge, the touch up paint makes it hardly noticible, I have to get close and look along the edge to see it.
Know how you feel. I leave for work when it is dark and here in west Texas one never knows what you will find in the road. I'm not sure what is going to kill me first. The heart attack of the near miss or the bill to fix the result. I just hope I can keep complaining about this for many more years.............

<------MAUI !
This is always one of my fears, especially on the interstate. Someone did a quick lane change on me when I was driving my pickup on the interstate and I ran over a large pc of recap from a tractor-trl. It sounded like it tore the whole underneath of my truck out. Luckily when I pulled over there was no damage. I would hate to think what it would have done to a vette. Good luck with your fix.
72driver: I found a good guy out here in Greenville, SC to do the front end (named Roman Chariot). Cost me only ~$300 to repaint the front end. He had a problem matching the paint, so he ended up repainting it a few times until he got the color correct (had to bring out the paint vendor for help). THAT'S the kind of service I want - he wouldn't let me have it until it was correct.
This is a BIG issue for me to learn - I can't have it both ways. If I want to enjoy it during the week, this is the price.
Like someone said, I hope to have this problem for many years to come! :
Gotta keep your eye's open and use that "race" inspired part of your car sometimes! Did you say the guy re-painted your bumper over and over again??? that's not how it should be!! It should be done right the first time. I would start looking around for another painter. Goodluck and sorry about your new mark.
The 1st few hickies are always the hardest but like you I did not spend all this money not to enjoy it. I have more than my fair share of marks on my Vette so I feel your pain. The way I see it, when something serious or enough hits happen that something needs to be replaced, then it's time for a upgrade. replacement part.
Once you get it fixed, get the 3M paint protection film applied. Every time you have to repaint any part of your car, the film will pay for itself in no time.
I have my bumper, hood, mirrors and rocker panels protected and the paint is still perfect. Visit my installer's site for more info.
Man that sucks. Had a similar experience a few weeks back. Got lucky and whatever it was I ran over, didn't cause any damage. Sorry you weren't as lucky. Hopefully you'll get it fixed soon and lookin' as good as new.
Nice Frby98, I can only hope to find as good a deal at a competent shop. And I like the suggestions about putting 3M on after the repaint. My ride hits the intertsate for over 3 hours one way about 4 times a month, and I do not want to have to repaint again in a couple of years!
This happened to me too. Repaint was $600. You have to replace the sill protector to repaint the sill (duh) to do it right. I just said WTF and did it $$$$$. Afterwards I was glad I did it. Sorry & good luck.
I recenlty did a long road trip - mostly interstate. While drive on a clear road in light traffic, no debri that I could see, BAMM, I hear the most terrible sound on the driver's side. When I finally got to a safe stopping point I noticed a nice chip on the driver's door just above the rocker. WTF.
I think all kinds of stuff is just waiting to jump up and bite at vette. It probably also flies off other vehicles - vette envy I guess.
Anyway, get some touch up paint and save the $$$$ to do it right periodically. For me, I didn't pay out all that cash on a car to let it sit in the garage.
