Default Blackwing Maint Question

What type of maintenance is required for a Blackwing? Changing the filter? Cleaning it? Oiling it? The reason I ask is if maintenance is required, how do you get to the filter once the installation is done? Do you need to disconnect the blackwing from the MAF everytime you need to perform maintenance? If so, I'm guessing this is a pain in the *** since most comments made about installing a blackwing bitch and moan about the lack of 'play' when trying to connect to MAF.

Yes you need to remove it. Suggest you find a BW cleaning kit as it will have instructions. Don't over oil it. Use some lubrication like wd40 to make the re-installation easier.

You have to take it out! I clean mine with Simple Green and recharge it with a mixture of mineral oil and alcohol!

The filter does have to be removed to clean it. There is a cleaning kit made especially for the car. I don't have any problems either putting the Blackwing on or taking it off.

Just think of it as more "quality time" with your baby

Found this site for installing the Blackwing...Once heard the Blackwing is the same basically as the hurricane. Looks to me that the filter is connected to the MAF....is that correct? And is that how i get to the filter....feel kinda stupid asking this question....but would like to check the filter and clean if it is needed....thanks http://www.97vette.com/howto/blackwing/index.html

The Blackwing has a little indicator that tells you when it should be cleaned. Some say you will never have to clean your Blackwing. Remember Donaldson make the air filters for the M-1 tanks that are surrounded by dust and sand all the time. They know how to make a pretty darn good air filter.

Read here to see how Donaldson keeps our troops alive:
Donaldson Filters Keep Troops Safe and Tanks Moving

My indicator is still on green

And I suppose the oil in the cleaning kit left over from the K&N filter on my previous Vette won't work on the Blackwing, will it?

Gotta use that 'special' Blackwing Oil, right?

That depends on your enviroment. If you live in an area with a lot of airborne dust then you would need to clean it a lot soon than if you lived (like I do) on the humid gulf coast. Pay attention to the cleaning indicator and visually inspect the filter; if it looks dirty, go ahead and clean it. I believe the advertised cycle is 50K miles.
