Default 01 Z06 Blackwing surging issues

On the advise of Ranger I am reposting...

I have an 01 Z06 with the Blackwing intake and Borla exhaust and the car surges from about 25mph and over. I am wondering if there are any fixes for this or if it can be minimized. Thanks

Dave

Here we have a new owner looking for some help. Anybody with an 01 and BW???

I run a Tric and can't offer any first hand perspective. But here is a thread that bears:

Developed a small problem – Surging

Might want to do some searching over a Z06vette too. Their search function is a bit more user friendly.

Surging after install of blackwing/slp CA box

I dont have the cold airbox on mine, but let me see if i understand this.....the surges are from turbulence in front of the filter and it from having the CA box, but i dont have the box, so does that make it worse or what... So if i get this I basically need to check all the connections and stuff and if thats a no go, then go with a new intake?
Starting to get confused newbie,
Dave

I'm running the blackwing - no box over it though. Haven't had any problems with it. Had it before I had my tune and never had any trouble (knock on wood) Sounds like something might be loose or you have gotten some oil on your MAF. Sometimes the new filters have a lot of oil on them - I know I had to wipe of mine after cleaning and let it dry extra long before driving the car - I over did it with the reoil. Other than that I'm not sure whay you'd be having trouble.

I am double down on this one. I flapped up cleaning my K n N with my Vararam, and didn't over oil (from much time here thanks guys) but left the air bridge way too loose :o I went for the big items thinking I had a bad MAF ect.. and then put in on right the 2nd time and all was well. I hope it is something loose, and them might want to try a PCM re-learn and hopefully not a oiled MAF. Good luck and let us know brother!!!

OK, I tightened things up on the intake and here are some things that i found. Also it helped a tad, but i am still getting some surging. One of the clamps was kinda loose. Now 3 quick questions/concerns for you guys that i can maybe get a little help on. First, one of the clamps are this metal crimp ones factory style clamps. this one seems a little loose i can spin it on the hose a little bit, wondering if this is might be too loose, seems loose to me, but do they make clamps that thin and as large in diameter. 2nd, the rubber hose that runs into the top of the filter seemes kinda loose too, the rubber grommet that connects the hose to the filter is what im talkin about(anyway to fix this one or does it even effect surging. 3rd, if there is oil on the MAF, how would i go about cleaning it, I dont want to just go at it without knowing what im doing. Dont want to buy a new one. Thanks for all your help, you guys have been very helpful.

I have dealt with this surging Blackwing problem for a long time. It is caused by turbulance in front of the filter. There are a few ways I have minimized the surging by dropping (extending) the filter below the nose frame rail. The problem with this is having to remove the plastic shroud in front of the condenser. This puts the filter in the airstream grabbing air from underneath. Not everyone has this problem, but I am one of the ones that do have it. Conicle filters, or round filters solve the surging problem. It is hard to get rid of it all together. I have alittle surge around 1600rpm.

Are you sure it is a stock MAF and not one of those aftermarket versions that are prone to surging?

I have the K/N FIPK on my '01 with no problems at all. Fit is way tight all around.

Loose connections should be solved first especially any that occur after the MAF. Remove everything and inspect for cracks or tears, then reassemble paying particular attention to a tight fit.

The Blackwing was the first mod I did!!
I never have had a problem with mine thru major mods!!
Make sure all the connections are TIGHT!!
Does your MAF have the screen??
If not, you may need a tune to compensate for the airflow, but make sure the airflow from the Wing to the throttle body is LEAK PROOF!!
The PCM doesn't like unknown airflow!!

Thanks for all the great info. Here is a pic of what i have just so you know what clamp i am talkin about. Also when i took it apart to retighten, I did not see a screen in front of the MAF.

its the 2nd clamp on the right, left from the tb. if that makes sense

This clamp is thinner and I can't tighten it, I think this is where i might be having a problem. Is there a clamp that is this thin that I can buy or should i rig up a pull tie to see if it helps as a temp solution for testing. Is it worth gettin a tune when all i have is the intake and a borla cat back. And if so, where can I go in the chicagoland area. Thanks for your patience and help guys

When you installed the Blackwing, did you disconnect the battery?
If not, try disconnecting it for about 10 min. This will allow the
computer to clear itself. It may need to relearn the new airflow
parameters.

Good luck
