I've had the Bel for 6 months and love it. It has saved my a-- sooo many times! I have it mounted next to the front window mirror and just slid it off with the suction mounts still in place when I want to remove it.
"Another source of alarms: a few new cars have cruise controls that use laser to measure distance to the car ahead. This feature is available on the Lexus LS430, Infiniti FX35 and FX45. This, of course, is real laser, not a false alarm."
Yeah the Chevy TrailBlazer has something too that sets it off. I remember the 1st time it went off I almost pooped my pants....
As for the best place to mount it, my personal favorite is right next to the rearview mirror as high as you can get it and wire it directly to the mirror.
Living in the somewhat almost completely but not quite totally great state of Virgina, where radar detectors are still illegal, is there a way that I could hypothetically mount a radar detector where it wasn't visible but still have the display and sounds available?
I believe this is the best place to mount, with one exception. If the detector is mounted upside down, then the rear sensor will get better reception. I'm still working on a custom mount to do this.
virginia ... tricky i would think , there is a small amt of 'leakage' in radar detectors if they catch that, your done
the mirror thing -- waste of time, why embed the display when the unit Must basically sit next to it (especially when the whole concept of 'moving said display' would only ever be to a location down lower out of sight of other cars trying to supposedly 'leach the benefit of your radar' ..>!flawed thinking in my view
personally i would like to suction cup the v1 down from the transparent roof -low enough to clear the front / back - maybe up behind the shoulders as far as driver is concerned - that would totally be not visable to Leos or drivers the cabin is too dark right up in there...
right up the top of the glass is difficult because of the tint on the windshield right there as well
for now, im on the edge of that tint -- high enought to use the tint to hide it a little but the lens is just below it...
the laser function -
from my reading - in cabin laser is flawed at best -given the rake of the glass of the windshield and the target beam usually at the licence plate area anyways
i think the k40 detector that mounts in the licence area (or behind the plastic can work too i think for those that dont need a front plate)
along with the laserveil paint that covers either the plate or (in my case ill try painting some on a cutout and mounting that behind the front licence plate cover as i dont have a front plate)
the k40 is discrete (they say) and the wiring ends up a light or two in the dash or someplace
the laserveil stuff, retards the detectable range to 600feet-800feet - if your laser goes off traditionally they say its merely to advise you to pull over because by then , its too late
with this stuff (again, more THEY SAY) you have 400-500feet or more to actually prepare before they get an accurate reading
(without discussing ethics surrounding the k40 laser-diffuser which scrambles their devices...)

I have a V1 installed in my Z06. I mounted it at the passenger side visor clip with a mounting device from Great Lakes Trophy. The unit is undetectable from outside the car since it is located high up on the windshield, but still has good coverage for both front and rear antennas. I hardwired my V1 into a switched line under the front dash and ran the wire under the headliner and down the A pillar. I also have the concealed unit that Valentine offers and have it mounted in the ashtray area at the bottom of the center stereo/AC stack. I just removed the ash tray and it makes a great place to conceal the concealed unit! I can even close the cover over it if I want to. The concealed unit works well in this location, although when in 3rd gear it is a bit covered, but other wise it works great in this location.
Sorry I don't have any pics to show you, but hopefully my description will help.

Check out these links for a V1 remote antenna kit for a Corvette:
I love my V1. I have it cupped to the windshield and tied into the rearview mirror. The great part is that it will not turn on unless the doors are closed and key is on.
I have the valentine 1. It is pretty expensive ($400), but it is one of the best out there. I like the fact that valentine allows customers to upgrade to newer models as they are released for a comparatively nominal fee. However, I think the Bell (i forget the model #) with the valentine from what I have heard.
The best place I have found to mount it is left of the rear view mirror at the top of the windshield. If you dont like the cigarette lighter adapter cable hanging down in your face here is a link to hardwire it into your eletrical system.
That about sums up my response on which detector and where to put it. I bought a mirror cable from forum member TeamSpeed (see post #15) and love it. No more cable in my face. You can't really go wrong with either the Escort or the Valentine. They test about the same. Users of the V1 love the directional arrows. Those that have never had them, don't know what they are missing.
The hardwire will also prevent you from draining your battery if the car is not driven for a while. I killed my Optima by having my V1 on for a few days.

I see a lot of you guys are mounting the Valentine to the left of the mirror but what happens when you need to use the visor? Doesn't it block the unit's rear antennas?
I mounted mine to the left or the mirror and have hardwired it with a remote display to my dash... It is out of the way and is very hard to be seen mounted...
I have both the Valentine 1 and the Escort ZR3 Laser Shifter.
I use the visor clip for the V1 so it's easy to get down and stash it if needed.
I also have an Escort 8100, but haven't used it since buying thr V1!
