Wired Radar Detector Burns Up thru Dash?

I had my detector directly wired thru the dashboard to avoid the cigarette lighter. Well, after 5yrs she burned up yesterday causing alot of smoke. I pulled the copper wire out thru the dash to avoid any further damage. The turn signals do not work as I installed two new fuses and they blew. Any idea what to look for to avoid the dealership? It was a Cobra detector purchased in 2000.

I'm guessing there is a short. I'd look for where the wire was spliced in and see if anything looks funky. If not, start from there and follow the wire. It probably melted the insulation some where... I'd use a multimeter to see if the wire is grounded. (Bad)

sorry to here about this. Hopefully its nothing too major and like the post above stated grab the ohm meter and start looking for the dead short
