Default Clutch Problems, Is This Normal?

hey everyone just want to thank you guys/ladies in advance for your input as it is GREATLY appreciated.

I had a new clutch and transmission installed in my car. The clutch is
brand named Luk

Problem 1: Going into first with text book shifting sometimes it will not go in all the way and I either have to double clutch or hope it doesnt pop out. happens 5% of the time

Problem 2: shifting from first to second with slight pressure to left of stick the stick will want to go from first to 4th. happens 10% of the time

Problem 3: shifting to 4th i feel resistance (analogy teeth of a gear not catching properly)

History:

1. had warranty and had transmission replaced. I paid for clutch
2. problematic from get go. waited a while and brought back. They opened up transmission and replaced clutch
3. problematic again from get go. now contacting owner of transmission shop.

do you guys have any recommendations. has anyone experienced this problem before? and for you manual guys. how smooth is your clutch?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING THIS!

Do you have a stock shifter? If so it sounds like maybe your shift fork is bent or your synchros are bad. Sounds more like tranny related issues then clutch IMHO. If you have a Hurst shifter maybe your set screws came loose.

Hi Wadds -

Problems 1 and 3 sound like worn synchronizers -

The second issue sounds like the CAGS (computer aided gear selection) which is a solenoid that blocks a 1 to 2 shift under certain driving conditions -

The light on your dash should appear when the 1-4 force is engaged.

I think you definitely need to talk to the owner in a professional and businesslike manner and get the first issue resolved. The CAGS can be eliminated through an update of the computer, or with a physical harness that can be installed in 10 minutes for $15.

good luck and

best regards -

Thats a good point about the CAGS, I had just assumed he had an eliminator like the rest of us. I should know better, never assume.

Default Wow okay how about this?

Man i so wish I could take you guys with me to the shop. Ill be honest I dont know much about cars so i feel as though everytime I have taken my car into the shop to complain about the same thing the mechanics/ manager will keep my car for a week and then say they pulled the transmission and clutch found nothing in the transmission and replaced the clutch.

I dont know what to believe. With my skepticism I think they are just pulling my chain, hoping to run the warranty out so then i will be really screwed.

So what Im left with is to keep bugging them until it shifts right. I dont trust these guys as I do with most mechanics.

My transmission warranty is going to run out in a couple months. If this is a continuing problem this 8000 tranny/clutch job will be a huge problem for me.

1. first had my warranty put to use as my clutch was horrible and so they said they would cover the transmission. (found out later they just machined my transmission). I paid for the clutch

2. problems months later forced me to return car, they had it for a week, stated they pulled the tranny and clutch. Replaced clutch and opened transmission to check for problems.
(oh yah they scratched my car and i made them fix it at a body shop $500 in damage)

3. weeks later problems continue now I want to speak to owner as the problem has not been resolved

I feel like a little kid that is being messed with. Or are these guys really trying their best and being honest.. Oky ill stop talking just dont know how to deal with this except speak with the owner.

any last pointers?!

a) are any of these guys certified? who are you dealing with? (feeling free to contact me w/ messaging if you dont want to reveal them) I've got a cousin who is about to be a licensed certified mechanic in the Port Dover area ... are these just the guys down the road or do they do work on vettes / hi-performance cars?

b) what are the specs on the car? year, mileage, 2nd owner?, etc ..

c) the warranty you speak of is it the org. or an aftermarket one .. or one offered by the shop?

d) did the touch any of the hydraulics? (slave cylinder) reason I ask is the conditions you're describing are similar to the ones i'm experiencing and i've been told it's most likely the slave cylinder .. the only reason I could think of for them cracking open your tranny would be to check for worn syncho's

Juust a last chance guess, ASSUMING the tranny was built properly. Do you think it's possible that the shifter wasn't properly installed or aligned?

Take off your consol and your shift boot, and look at the hole in the front of your shifter...if in neutral the two holes line up it's aligned properly, if not...maybe that's the first place to check.

I'm not saying your tranny is fine, i'm just saying it's a slight possibility.

The shifting problem really sounds to me like an alignment problem in the shifter. If it won’t go all the way into more than one gear there has to be something stopping it. Do you have the same through in the shifter as before the work? Most of the time clutches are either good or bad, i.e. grab or don’t grab. If it’s noisy with the clutch pushed in when your setting still it’s probable the through-out bearing. If you don’t have a HURST shifter it might be a good time to get one. It would easily eliminate the shifter and you’ll have a nice shifter too. I have seen in the past were an inexperienced R and R jacked the tranny to high trying to get it aligned to the motor and with the shifter still in the car bend linkage. I don’t care how good it was bent back, it will never be right. I am sorry Bro and let us know how it worked out.
