If you read De Javu then you know my story. What you don't know is how I ended up with my C5. For almost 30 years I looked over at every Vette that passed by me and repeated the words to myself and my wife that someday I am going to own another Vette. My wife heard that montra so often that she stopped paying attention. she stopped saying things like you don't need that or what are you going to do with that. The reason she stopped responding is that she believed that after all these years buying a Vette was never going to happen. If you asked me at the time, I couldn't visualize how it was going to happen. In August of 2004 I went out to lunch just minding my own business when I drove passed the same car dealer that I have been passing for 5 years. The reason I drive by is because this dealer specializes in Vettes and I would drive by just to get a look at them. there was an 04 mag red coupe in the second row and it caught my eye. I drove in not expecting to buy anything becuase it was not feasible. The salesman came out to greet me and asked if I wanted to sit in it. I said no immediately and that I was just looking. After a few minutes of walking around it I asked if I could sit in it. He opened the door and I sat down. It was hot inside and I asked if I could start it and run the air conditioning. He said ok. I started to think about driving it but I remember a friend telling me that if I drove it I would want it, so don't drive it. I rationalized that driving around the block would not be enough to tempt me into buying it. I asked if I could drive it around the block and the salesman said yes. My next question was how far can I go with it. he said have fun take it out and open it up. Wow, I couldn't believe my good fortune. I was thinking finally I am getting a chance to drive a C5 and I don't have to buy it to find out what it is like. Well folks I don't have to tell you how I felt after the test drive. When I got back the salesman asked me what I thought and I told him that the experience was unforgettable. he asked if I wanted to buy it and I said that I was curious and wanted to know what they would sell it for. the car was heavily discounted and i could not refuse. I told him to hold the car while I talked to my wife and that I would return the next day. My wife was in shock when I told her what I did but to her credit she said "if that is what you want and we can afford it then go for it." I crunched the numbers once again, realized that I could afford it and here I am a year later. I still cannot believe it is sitting in my garage.
My mother came by to visit yesterday afternoon. She asked what I had been doing and I told her I had been in the shop working on the Vette. She looked around, paused and said " Greg, I think you are having a love affair with that car." I looked at her and asked her how couldn't I fall in love with it. It is the nicest car I have ever owned.
That's a cool story. And you're doubly-blessed, as you have a great car AND a wife who understands that there is room in life for the indulgences that make us happy, no matter if they're practical or not. Keep em both!
Great Story and what is almost as great is your wife. As a matter of fact she sounds exactly like mine. Isn't it great to have both a great corvette and wife?
