Hi, I'm relatively new to the board and have only owned my vette for about 6 weeks now. The guy I purchased it from had already put in the K&N Filter, Flowmaster exhaust and reprogrammed the ECU. He mentioned he was going to get an x-pipe next. What does an x-pipe do exactly? Thanks - this board is AWESOME!
An x-pipe scavenges exhaust gasses more effectively than an h-pipe. In effect, it will decrease (but usually not entirely eliminate) decel popping and gurgling. In theory, it should add a handful of HP but you probably won't even notice.
I put an Corsa x-pipe on mine when I put on the Corsa Indy exhaust system. It did not completely eliminate the burble on deacceleration. Corsa does not advertise that it will completely eliminate the burble and popping. I don't know what it would have sounded like without the x-pipe. It sounds great now even with the little bit of burbling I get. Best of luck. Dan
As stated above the X pipe will be more efficient than the H pipe for the exhaust gas. You should also see a reduction in the "popping" sound when you get off the gas suddenly.
If you are considering an 'x-pipe' as a mod, suggest you consider replacing the entire midsection of your exhaust which also includes you cats and put the hi-flo cats on as well.
That wasy you won't have a redo in the future when the mod bug bites you even harder, the center piece will be done!

not bad advice....
I've heard similar exhaust with and without the X pipe. It gives a deeper sound to the exhaust. The H-pipe is there to equalize pressure between the 2 exhaust pipes. The H-pipe has a small hole burned in the pipe to vent gasses to the other side. Its crude, but adequate for stock exhaust.
The X pipes flow more smoothly and will eliminate some of the popping on SOME a/m exhaust. Its a good mod.

And it elimnates the rattle h-pipe issue. There is a TSB for the problem, but I'm convinced it's the same crappy welding that the exhaust flanges have and when it gets hot the inside of the h-pipe rattles. As always YMMV. Jefff
The purpose of the H and X Pipes is to more evenly balance the dual exhaust pipes in order to improve flow. The firing order in most US V8s has 2 cylinders in each bank firing in sequence. This will alternatively build up slightly higher pressure in the left and right exhaust pipes half the time. The H and X pipes are supposed to bleed off this higher pressure to the opposite side. The X pipe does a better job of allowing flow from one side to the other. Hot Rod magazine did a dyno comparison a couple years ago and showed a positive HP gain with an X Pipe.
It supposedly gets rid of the popping as mentioned...I think it gets rid of about $200 from your wallet
Sorry gotta disagree with this one. I got my X pipe used, and it smoothed out the sound of the idle, and it indeed elminated about 95% of the pops I got. A much smoother and more refined exhaust note, although with no to little performance gain, I still think it was worth it. I would do it again in a heart beat.

An X-pipe will smooth out the exhaust flow. I put one on mine because I was getting a lot of resonance and popping from the exhaust. It sure did solve those problems very well.
