Question for ya. Brought my Vette up from Fla. Have not put license plat on front of car. Kind of ....refusing to! Like the look with just the plate cover. Was stopped once and he never said a thing about it. What do you think? Ever been hassled for not having it and do or don't you have it on front?
Front plate is required but like you I chose to run without one. I haven't been stopped nor had any problems thus far. When I take my Vette in for inspection the guys there have been cool, just requesting I put the front plate up in the windshield. Stupid state revenue generating law to begin with. I say roll the dice.
Carry it with you, do the excuse, Sorry, was at a car show, forgot to put it back on! Works even better if you have an old carshow Reg form
They all know this one!! lol
It's not a points violation so if you want to run without it you have to consider the tickets a tax. At $70 per pop you'll get tired of paying if you're in a town that makes a point of ticketing cars without front plates but it won't change your insurance rates at all.
I've been running without a front plate since '98 and have never been hassled about it, even when stopped for some other reason. One time a trooper even was asking me about what my vanity plate meant, but made no issue about not having a front one. I sometimes also run a mask that has no plate cutout and haven't been stopped. The only incident I had was when a small town cop asked me why he never sees Vettes with the front plate on, yet he didn't give me a ticket either.
Originally I used to have the front plate on until a trooper I knew who also had a C5 told me I should take it off! He said there was a sort of unwritten thing where they don't seem to hassle Vette owners for no front plate. I know of a Boxster owner who after driving without his front plate for less than two weeks received a ticket and was told to put it back on. The cop made a remark alluding to "do you think you're driving a Corvette?"
One more amusing incident. I was getting gas and the attendant was training a new kid. We overheard him told the other guy "when Corvettes come in never go to the front to copy down their plate number." The new guy asked why. He said he didn't know, they just never do. My wife and I had a big laugh about that.
No front plate, but it sits up on the dash(with the help of a tiny piece of velcro) viewable through the windshield, havn't been hassled about it even when stopped (once).
No plate since March. No problems on roads. Did get pulled over twice in a local park. They always have a speed trap set up in the park and I guess the LEO gets bored. So..I go by (not speeding) and they pull me over. Both times, used the 'just took pics, forgot to put plate back on' excuse. Worked both times. Did get a warning the second time. So I guess if it happens again, the LEO will see I have a warning and will probably ticket me.
Had the vette over a year and still havent gotten pulled over for it. But I carry the plate in the car, JIC, with a story at the ready. Bottom line, its just money not points. Now, 3 tickets in as many months, I'd put the plate on...but until then.
Was curious about this myself as I am about to take delivery on a new C5 and was debating to leave it off myself. I have heard people say that they keep the plate mounted underneath the removeable nose piece and use the "forgot to put it on after the carshow" excuse.
I do know someome however that almost got a DUI after the cop had used that as the excuse to pull him over after he walked out of a bar and got into his car. I am not condoning drinking and driving but it does not take much to be over the limit and I have seen cops that will sit out front of bars/resutaunts waiting for an excuse to pull over someone leaving to nail them with more than a missing plate (also don't hang anything from your rearview mirror).
Man I live in the wrong part of the state - I can't have tinted windows or no plate without getting harassed by the locals. Hazlet cops know me so no problem, but middletown and Homdel are all over it.
I decided with this car no tint and I will put the front plate on just never want an excuse to be pulled over for no good reason and then the cop finds out I had 1 or 2 drinks
For 2 years I never used my plate, and never had a problem; but put it on when the car needed to be inspected...I decided not to take it off to avoid the potential hassle.
