Default Help - Check Engine Light went on

While driving to a car show today I noticed the light. I immediately pulled into a parking lot and got out the manual. The light is on steady and it says "an emission control system malfunction has been detected on your vehicle".

I have an '02 ZO6 with 4,300 miles and a GM extended warranty. I shutter at the thought of taking my baby to a dealer but I'm not sure I have any options.

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks, in advance.

Fill the tank with 93 octane gasoline; easy on the burn-outs for a while... light will go out.

I've heard that can be caused by a loose gas filler cap. Worth a check.

Went right out to the garage and it appears to be tight. I'll try anything before I go to a dealer.

Thanks

I'll give it a try. Thanks! (at 59 years old I 'm too cheap to be burning out $ 300 tires!)

Go to this site:

www.97vette.com and follow the instructions near the bottom on how to decode your C5's computer codes. Post the codes here and it should lead to a diagnosis. Codes with an H after them are history codes and have cleared, codes with a C are current. Post the codes (likely in the PCM section 10) once there, press and hold the reset and the light will go out. Let us know what you find.

Do you have a Cags Skip shift eliminator installed ? I installed one on mine and it worked for 3 months ok then my check engine light came on and stayed on. Took it in thinking it was covered under warranty. Turns out the skip shift eliminator I put on went bad and threw the check engine light on. they charged me $90 for analysis and said your part you put on caused the light to come on. When they took it off the check engine light went out. I purchased another one and have had no problems since. If you put one on you might want to check and see if it went Bad. Hope that helps you.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went to the site and printed the info. I probably won't get to it tonight but will tomorrow after I get home from the office.

Thanks, again!

Happened to me on a cross country trip...turned out to be a different brand and octane of fuel (91 down from 93)....went off after I burned about half a tank.
