Took out the starter to install some long tube headers, forgot which wire goes where. Acctually I remember all the wires except for a small black wire hanging down.

According to the service manual, there is no small black wire that runs to the starter.

The purple wire runs to the small solenoid coil terminal.
The thick cable, the gray wire, and the rust-colored wire all attach to the big solenoid post. Based on the size of the ring terminals at the end of each wire, it would be difficult to screw them up.

There is a sensor in the engine block near and just above the starter, are you sure you didn't catch one of those wires when dropping the header in?

And here are a couple of instructions and pics that show the physical connection.

When installing the purple starter motor lead wire, orient it upwards to the 10:00 position. Install the starter motor S terminal washer, purple lead wire and nut. Tighten the S terminal nut to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

Install the gray and rust colored wire from the engine wiring harness along with the positive battery cable terminal to the starter motor stud. Tighten the positive battery cable stud nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
