Default Cruise control...just figured this out...

When using cruise control...every time you hit the "cruise set" button it will drop the set speed one MPH automatically. Did anyone else know this? I found it useful.

Heh, heh, and everytime you 'tap' the little slide switch, it will increase the speed by one mph.

Amazing, huh?

The tap down and slide up decrease and increase have been a GM feature of their cruise controls since the 70's. First one I noticed was on my '77 Grand Prix, then '79 Bonneville, and every GM vehicle I've had since.

And a myth about cruise control... "It is a economy device". No, far from it. You can get far better mpg without the cruise control. You get the best maleage by keeping the rpms steady while the cruise trys to keep the speed steady. Keep in mind, though, that true economy driving is one of the most unsafe type of driving there is.

Increasing Speed While Using Cruise
Control
There are two ways to go to a higher speed:
• Use the accelerator pedal to get to the higher
speed. The speed will not begin to increase
until sufficient pedal travel is achieved. Press the
SET button at the end of the lever, then release the
button and the accelerator pedal. You will now
cruise at the higher speed.
• Move the cruise switch to R/A. Hold it there until
you get up to the speed you want, then release
the switch. (To increase your speed in very small
amounts, move the switch to R/A briefly, then
release it. Each time you do this, the vehicle will go
about 1 mph (1.6 km/h) faster.)
The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display the
cruise set speed.

Reducing Speed While Using Cruise
Control
There are two ways to reduce speed while using cruise
control:
• Press in the SET button at the end of the lever
until you reach the lower speed you want, then
release it.
• To slow down in very small amounts, press the
SET button briefly. Each time you do this,
you will go about 1 mph (1.6 km/h) slower.
The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display the
cruise set speed.

Because when driving for max fuel economy you don't hold a steady speed, say your cruising at 65 MPH and come to a long up hill grade, the cruise control will add throttle (hence more fuel) to maintain 65 MPH, however if your on a max fuel run (without cruise) you'd hold a steady foot (RPM) and the car would eventually start slowing down as it climbs the hill. With other car's around you (possible on cruise) you could cause a hazard. I've taken my Z on a MAX fuel mileage run and I can tell it's annoying since you are always gaining or loosing speed depending on the grade of the road and traffic around you. But I did pull a REAL 31.7 MPG out of it on a 150 mile run to Effingham.
