Default My own Blackouts

I'm gonna try to blackout my own lights with some paint. It's testors paint # 2949. (Black window tint) We'll see how it goes this weekend. I'll post some pics and let you guys know. I know its permanent and not the stuff to tape and what not. Im just not happy with the front blackout inserts. Always move and what not. Whatever happens happens right?!

Default Good luck

I wouldent , I had covers for the reverse lights that werent dark enough for me, so i sprayed a little spray tint on them, and it came out looking like ***. I know how to paint stuff too, its just not a good product if your into perfection, it wount look smoothe ans it will look bumpy, but thats MHO. If your covers move around too much, use more doublesided tape. If it works for you, let us know, im sure other members would go this route. The blacked out look is awesome.

You might want to contact CF member 74-Roadster. He painted his (not sure what with) and they came out great. Although I have the covers I woud say that 74-Roadster's got the best looking blackouts on the forum. Just MHO.

Thank you very much!!!!!!

I sanded them and painted them with House of Kolor pro flo clear tinted with 17-18% jet black (6 parts clear to 1 part black). I tried various paint guns but since my detail gun isn't very good, I ended up using my airbrush on most of the ones I've painted. The airbrush takes a lot more time but can do a very good job. 3-4 thin, even coats and then wetsand with 1500 and 2000 then a good buffing with swirl remover followed up by a fine polish. I was painting lights on the side for a while, but right now I'm swamped with two major mods and we have a baby on the way that's due in mid October, so I won't be painting any lights for quite a while.

Black outs are asking for a ramming... Experience speaks. I owned a car with blackouts - it was rear-ended two times, before they were removed.

Holy Crap batman! I could probably fly you out to California, pay for your meals, have you paint mine, fly you home, and in the long run, save lots or $$$$$$$.

I have a Blk/Blk 92 C4.My windows are double 5% and a set of chrome Y2k's....anyways on to the point.Mostly I drive her on friday nights. You have to know how to look out of her for sure.Other than that she sits in the garage.I am really pondering the blackouts.I can spray very well and have no issue trying it...BUT I too wonder at what point is too much?
The tailights seem to be a point of worry for me...some drivers only need one more excuse to hit someone.

Have a couple coats on and looking good so far. I went this route b/c i didnt like the flat look the blackout kits have, i like the curves of the lights. Also, at times they look too black. I know the point is "Blackout" but i like the dark tint. But we'll see. I can always go darker. Also I started with the rear side markers as the tester, figured they are the hardest to get to and a pain to unscrew and hopefully cheaper to replace...haha.... like i said, we'll see, but so far so good

If you mess up, you can always sand the paint off with 320 wet paper. After the paint is gone, wetsand 'em with 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500 and 2000 then polish with a compound followed by a swirl remover and they'll be as good as new. If you plan to paint again, stop sanding after 800 grit

Hope they turn out nice!

Thanks for the advice 74 Roadster. I am running into a problem maybe. The tint is starting to kinda look like interior plastic, with the texture. I don't think im going to thick on the coats. I think i should be ok, with just sanding it down huh?

If you wetsand back to the original red plastic, you can move up to finer grits and finally polish the red plastic again to restore the original look. Trust me, as I went through trial and error trying to figure out what ratio to mix the black into the clear, I stripped my tail lights 2 times and started over.

I've never used the product your trying, so I can't help out with your issue.

Thanks, i like doin things on my own and if i dont have to buy em i dont want to. Like gaining experience and to be able to say that i did that, and not have to say, yea i just bought those. I like using my hands. but thats just me, thanks for all the help. I will try more wet sanding and see if it will work out and hopefully get a clear coat on tomorrow.
