With the constant column lock thing on the forum, I don't get why people just don't fix the thing and move on. Nobody here wants to go to dealerships because nothing is ever done correctly in the first place. Why agitate yourself? You know the fix and, from everything I have read, they don't. Just do it.
I'm really frustrated with this situation because I want to get a dyno tune. The shop will give you a Predator with the custom tune installed.
However, I'm afraid if I have to take the car back to the dealer for something he is better equipped to diagnose and repair, he'll do the reflash without my permission. This will lose the custom tune. Diablo says to reload the stock tune back in before going to the dealer, which puts the custom tune back into the predator. However, if the dealer does the column lock re-program, he changes the VIN somehow. Now, the Predator won't go back in, and you have to send it back to Diablo for some internal re-programming for a charge of $75. I'm thinking that the best thing to do would be to let the dealer re-program just to get it out of the way, then do the dyno tune. I don't know if the Predator will take out the part of the dealer's program that shuts down the engine if the computer thinks the column is locked. I've had the CLB in my 2k MN6 for over 4 years with no problems, just one "pull key and wait XX seconds" message. Ive been ignoring the recall notices because Chevy's recall really does not fix the problem for MN6 cars.
Terry, do you happen to have or know the part # for the Harness K kit? I had the original recall, C01044, performed Feb-03. They used what they referred to as a Wire Kit, PN 88952428. I was wondering if they are one and the same.
I had the column lock on me once, Aug-00. They replaced the solenoid at that time, PN 26050960. I've never had any problem since.
Thanks, Don
The Harness K kit is not the same as the wiring kit. The original Harness K part number is 88952427, which includes the lock plate replacement and the wiring harness with the relay in it.
This part number was superceded by part #89023816, in which GM changed the relay in the harness, and started having relay failures.
I located one of the ORIGINAL kits in a dealer's inventory (instead of ordering it from GM), with the original relay (black instead of white), and the kit works fine. Even if the column lock fails, the lockplate has been removed so the column cannot lock. The relay still has to work so that the BCM receives the correct signal and does not shutoff the fuel when you try to drive the car.
After over 4 years of ownership, I've also been receiving a bunch of recall notices over the past few months.
I've had the CLB installed since the car was new. No frigging way will I let some goon mess with it. If they perform the BCM reflash, they WILL remove the CLB in most cases.
The way I look at it, I FIXED the problem over 4 years ago with the CLB, and only now is GM contacting me to perform a CYA bandaid that still doesn't fix the root problem of a defective design.
It'll be interesting the next time I need to take the car in for warranty work...
So where do I get the aftermarket CLB? And can I install this myself?
You can order the CLB from Corvettes of Houston for $49.95. That is what I did. It is easy to install - I did it in 45 minutes taking my time & being very careful. I could probably do another one in 15 minutes now that I know what is what. Here is a link to the most helpful instructions:http://97vette.com/howto/columnlock/index.html
These instructions are actually better than what comes with the CLB. Study the pics carefully, take your time, you will not have any trouble. Then you can enjoy the Vette as nature intended and not have to worry anymore - JUST DO IT!!!!!!
I had the recall done back in July to my 02 vette manual 6-speed. Immediately after it was done, I called to order the CLB and was informed that if I had the recall done, installation of the CLB would only burn the board. Thus far, (without the CLB) I have not yet experienced a lock-up, knock on wood.

Which supplier told you this and which board are they referring to that could be a problem (BCM)?
It is hard to understand how just reprogramming could cause a circuit board to burn up if it was not a problem before.
I have heard on the forum before that aftermarket CLB kit have always been suspected to cause problems with the BCM because they do not keep the column lock actuator in the circuit as the GM Harness K kit is design to do, but I have never been able to confirm this. To be safe, I installed the GM Harness K kit instead of an aftermarket CLB on my 04 Z06 and have had no problems.
There has been some speculation here that the CLB does not pass enough current to keep certain electrical contacts clean, which would allow error codes, etc. I do not know enough about electrical engineering to agree or disagree. Just reporting what was said.
I installed the CLB soon after buying my C5, when I received my recall notice I sent it back with a receipt for the purchase of the CLB, and they sent me a check reimbursing me for the CLB.
While it certainly would be nice to have them reimburse for the CLB, as they rightly should, something tells me that would be pushing my luck.
If the CLB prevents me from being stranded, having the car towed, and having the dealership service department messing with the electronics, (with a better than 50% chance they will either not fix the problem or cause a new one), I will consider it money well spent and be satisfied.

After filing an online complaint to our attorney general, I was offered a full refund from GM on my column lock repair. I would highly recommend investing the 5-10min to do this. Not only to get your money back, but for GM to feel some heat from the hassle they are causing.
Also, if your as frustrated as I am, go that extra step and fill out a ticket with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ ) They are currently investigating this recall, but don't have enough complaints on file to do anything about it. I know that there are some frustrated owners on here, so let your voice be heard!
I used the site to report this and guess what !?! The previous owner also complained of it.
It would behoove GM to install the by-pass or give us free AAA.
