C5 Body Damage
Ran over a rolling exhaust pipe on the freeway (couldn't avoid it, I almost did but just caught the end) and got a 4" gouge (down to the fiberglass) on the panel under the passenger door. Anyone recommend how I can patch/fix it, short of going to a body shop and paying tons of money?

Go to the body shop. Don't do it half-assed. If you do a crappy job it'll cost you when you sell the car.

You have no choice but to go to the body shop!

On my '00 I had similar damage - cost ot repair $675, which I felt was very reasonable.

body shop it. had the same type of gouge in my fender / rocker (the side part) cost $525 to fix that (reclear fender) and patched and fixed gouge.
another incident cost ~ $350 for a dent in my door, patch & repainted entire door.
it's not as bad as you'd expect .. get a few quotes .. and make sure they're a quality bodyshop.

Like others have said, just go to the body shop. You won't be happy unless you fix i right. Don't take any shortcuts.

it's pretty apparent there is only 1 way to get this fixed. good luck. btw, too bad it happened but i suspect the damage could have been far worse. bub
