I know this is a double post...it is also in the tech section. Grumpy, please let this one slide.
O.K. Guys, I am f*king up my car right now. I am changing rotors and pads on the rear.
Right side problem - I have an auto. My emergency brake is not engaged. I pulled to right rotor off and it looks like the emergency brake assembly loosened with it. A metal clip that looks like a piece of bent coat hanger popped out and my e-brake assembly was sort of floppy. I think I got that clip back in place (half - assed)...but not sure. Has anyone else had this problem?
Left side problem I have the caliper off...but the f**king rotor will not come off. It doesn't feel like it is rusted in place, rather, it feels like the e-brake drum is catching and pulling it back. I don't want to have the same problem as I had on the right side. So, I am being careful. For all I know, it might be rusted in place, but it seems like the rotor is getting hung up at the bottom.
I have been screwing around with this car for 5 hours...will someone please help me. Honestly, right now I just want to roll it into the street and set fire to it. Having insurance buy me a new one would be easier than putting this thing together.
Please let me know your thoughts.
If someone thinks they can help...I'll PM you my cell phone number so you don't have to type a whole lot. Thanks.
I remember a post about the clip part of your problem. I believe it will clip back in place, although a real pain in the ash. Try checking the other side and seeing how that side's clip is in, and then go to the side where it popped out.
I'd say the rotor is just stuck on and needs persuaded, not sure though
Hopefully someone will chime in with more help. Good luck
I replaced my rotors about a month ago, and I know it was a PIT
A to get the rear rotors to come loose. I just banged away with a mallet and used plenty of WD40 until they finally came loose. Unfortunately, I didn't have the problem you describe so I can't be of much help there. I hope others will chime in and help.
I am going to Wal-Mart to buy a rubber mallet. Honestly, I don't care if this f**king car falls apart. I am going to get this damn rotor off, and if I have to, I'll drive around with the rear end scraping on the road. It'll take me 15 minutes to go get a mallet. I might not stop at the rotor.
It has probably been years since I've been this irritated. Thanks for the idea.

Hi Prosecutor -
Take a deep breath - if it isn't coming apart then there has to be something holding it together.
Do you have a service manual? It is always best to have one when doing any real work on a car. It is kinda important to know what the torque values are ,and if you need to replace any bolts that are "torque to yield" etc.
I need to get to bed, but I will look in the morning at my manual and post the instructions.
I am putting new pads and rotors on our 99 tomorrow - and painting the calipers.
I'd suggest you try to chill down and relax some. Make sure that the rotors are not held on by the rotor retainer clips. They look something like this
All you need to do is to take these off by using some sort of pliers and using your rubber mallet gently hammer them out
Ofcourse, you need to take the calipers and calipers bracket off before hammering the rotors out

I'm back from Wal-Mart. They didn't have any rubber mallets, so I bought a 2.5 lb. sledge hammer. I'm gonna get that f**kin rotor off.
i remember having to take the back side of an axe to the bolts. The damn rotor would NOT come off... finally it did, but i thought the whole car was going to come off the jack stands cuz we had to use so much force banging on it with the axe.
Not a good idea at 4:02 a.m., been there done that...... never works out well.. give it till daylight, don't wind up resenting the car. Sometimes this stuff SHOULD go to a mechanic. This ain't my '61 Falcon and there are certain things I just don't screw with these days.......Hang in, you WILL get it..........
Try to take time and take it easy, I know that you've been working with the brakes for a while now. I've been in your shoes before but with another type of car, I ended up messing things up because I was impatient and ended up with a larger more expensive repair that I would original have had if I brought it to a mechanic. I know this response does not help your problem at hand, but this at least would hopefully clear your mind. Just like everybody else's said. Wait till morning and think things through and think what you could've missed.
