Default lectrical help

The courtesy lights in my 98 stopped working - all of them. The circuit is protected by a mico-relay. This is a little plastic box with 4 pins on the bottom, and it's located in the passenger side footwell fuse box.

My question is, do these go bad very often, and if you put a new one in backwards, will it be damaged? I did just that, and the lights still don't work. The door switches seem OK, since the lights in the window controls and door lock switches come on when the doors are opened.

Any help or thoughts on this would be appreciated.

After you changed the relay ... did you check and/or change the #2 and #42 fuses in that same box?
