Default OK you creative types, any suggestions?

Here is a picture of my car

and here is what I'm looking to do. As you can see I have polished thin spokes. I also have a set of magnesium wheels coming in and am looking for suggestions on refinishing them. Assuming they can't be polished or chromed (that's what I'm told) the only thing left is powder coating. WHAT COLOR??? I could go back to original but would like something else. Black? Maybe. Mellinnium yellow? Maybe. Red? NO. I don't want to drive a circus wagon. What do you think? Here is the mag wheel.

They can be polished, and look wonderful. If you decide to do that though have them clear coated to keep the shine.

Well you're right about keeping it as it is. I probably won't change it on a premanent basis but it might be a fun change once in a while with two sets of wheels. Could any of you show a picture of polished mags?

Hi Chief,

Magnesiums look good on millenium yellow. I would suggest finding a place that can repair the chips and re-coating the original color. Those chips look like alignment machine to me, certainly could be from something else.

I hated my magnesiums at first, but I'm learning to like them better every day. My car is a 2001. There were only 307 cars of any color delivered from the factory in 2001 with magnesiums.

I'm not sure how this person did it, but I can tell you how I have done a set of aluminum wheels before.

Supplies:
2 large spray cans of aircraft paint remover.
plastic scrapper
pk of 600 grit sand paper wet/dry
pk of 1000 grit sand paper wet/dry
pk of 1500 grit sand paper wet/dry
Mothers Billet polish
and alot of time

First spray a wheel down with the paint remover. Let it set up, then gently scrape away the paint. You might need to do a couple applications but get all the paint off this way. It will be clear coated so as many as you deem needed.

Now your ready for the 600. I do it all wet, a bucket of water to dip the paper in often helps. The 600 will take of any remaining coating but be careful not to get crazy cause it can be a little harsh. that's all you want the 600 for, if it's down to metal then your ready for the others.

The other set of sand paper is to make the wheel as smooth as glass. Start with the 1000 and work into the 1500 making the wheel smooth to the touch, if there is any imperfections now is the time to "work" them out.

When your happy with the wheel do a test area with the polish and see how she looks. You can guage from there how far you want to go.

It's a long process but the end result is pretty rewarding. I think I had about 6hrs in each wheel. That was done all by hand. Good thing it's an extra set of wheels so you can do one here and there and not be pressed as I was.

Default Wheels

Chief, it sounds as if he has it down. You need a time-consuming project since retirement. When you get them finished and installed, send me your chrome thin-spokes, and I will safe-guard them for you. LOL

I actually have the magnesiums on my MY 2000 C5 coupe and I think they look just awesome. There are some good pics of it here:

The problem with polishing magnesium is finding someone that will do it! As for powder coating another color? No!
