Default I hit 234 yesterday.

Degrees that is.

Air temp was 93º and I was sitting in traffic with the A/C on. It dropped back down when I turned the A/C off but at the same time, the traffic eased up so I don't know how much good turning off the A/C really did.

Questions:
A) Is 234º okay? The manual says the alarm goes off at 255º.

B) Besides driving faster, is there anything I can do to make my engine run cooler?

I honestly don't watch mine too closely, so I'm not sure what the normal range is for coolant. The obvious things to do/check are:
1) Make sure you have proper fluid levels and they have been changed according to the recommeded service intervals.
2) Clean the radiator (search for suggestion on how to)
3) Check and make sure your fans (pretty sure this car has two) are working.

For a drastic rememdy, turn your heater on full blast (I know...in the summer that sounds stupid). By turning on the heater, you have increased the area for heat transfer and then the fan increases it further. I have used this in the past. Also, if it is a mechanical fan vs. an electric fan, revving the engine increases the fan speed, thus pulling more air through the radiator. Will NOT work with electric fan.

Actually it's better to keep your air on high when your stuck in traffic. At speeds less than 35 mph the a/c will keep your fans on. Your low speed fan comes on at 226 and goes off at 219. High speed fan goes on at 235 and off at 226. I thinks that's right. Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right, he is wrong. Thermostat controls min temp, not max

My bad.... I was doing my usual speed-reading and completely mis-read the question.... Sorry about my earlier post. I'm in agreement with MY1STPEWTER's post!

Turning off your a/c really doesn't do anything... Remember, the car has two fans beneath your air-bridge.

on hot days, stop & go w/ a/c on, we routinely hit 226 degrees. get moving on an expressway & it drops right down to 196 on the button. bub

Best thing you can do is clean the accumulated junk out of the A/C condenser and radiator fins. You have to remove the top shroud cover to get to the radiator as it's behind the A/C condenser.

This question is brought up so many time in Summer it ought to be a sticky.

Hey, IDRVFST. I see you have a 98 Vette like mine. You might want to change your Dexcool depending on your miles. I did and it helps with temps. Hope this helps.

You are right, but.
But, a long time ago I posted a question asking where is and how to remove the top shroud.
I am still waiting for the help of the Forum members.
No rush guys, I am very patient.......and retired. Give the answer to my survivors in case...................it takes time to reply to such a minor issue. And BTW I did not check yet (of course) if the car is a vacuum cleaner but it aspires a lot of chicks.

In the meantime in 94+ temp coolant doe not go over 208 with some peaks at 212-218 and oil reaches a max of 218.

OK here's the drill, better late than never. The top shroud is held down by two screws on each side next to the hood supports. You'll have to loosen the airbridge to get it out. After removal, take a hose either water or air to clean the fins on both units. I prefer air, as it's less messy. I put a 18" piece of 3/8" hose on my air gun nozzle with a 1/8" pipe elbow on the end so I could get between the radiator and the A/C condenser. There's only about an inch of space. Got over a cup full of sand , dirt, and general stuff out.

Thx very much.

StuzVete was bumping 234 to 240 with A/C
...took and look and my yard was in the radiator...
I mean it looked fuzzy...
Rinsed the dirt and sand and other hairy things out and was amazed that it actually ran across town at 94-97 degrees and then romped on it a little and only made it up to 225...

...it only takes a very little debris to run hotter...
