Default air filter cleaner

I have a vortex ram air cleaner and I was going to buy a K&N filter cleaning kit but one of the major vendors at Carlisle told me that all you need to do is clean your filter with soap and water and something to cut the grease. Has anyone use a home remedy for cleaning there filter? Thanks for the help Doug

I clean my twin cone K&N filters with Simple Green and a soft brush and recharge with a mixture of mineral oil and alcohol!

I use Dawn dish washing liquid and recharge using the K&N kit, but I'm sure jrose's method works equally well.

Thanks for your reply. What does recharge mean and what concentration of oil and alcohol to use and what do you do with that mixture? Also how often do you clean your filter? I appreciate your help.

I use Simple Green. Then thoroughly dry and re-oil.

break it down for the homies ... (please)

1. release clamps and lift up air filter
2. shake off dust and debris
3. in a sink large enough, rinse and run dishwater detergent
thru filter to clean as much as gently possible, brushes ok
4. allow to dry
5. prepare mix of rubbing alcohol (X parts to Y parts of Mineral Oil) , paint it on with a some type of BBB

Buy the K&N recharger kit at Pep Boys for under $10, follow directions and be done with it. Kit should last for at least 3 cleanings. Then you know it's done right.
