I wish I could pick some of the subs but that's not how it works with tract builders. I will need an electrician after though because I'll want a generator installed. I figure I'll just trade my snow blower and lawn mower for a generator

Default Generator?

Not sure you were serious, but a generator is of little use. If you want it to work when you need it, you have to run it once a month. You also need plenty of fresh gas that you really don't want around your new house: a small generator which may support a refrigerator, tv and lights will burn a gallon an hour (24 gals/day). Where will you get/keep that much gas?

Even a $10K system running on propane will not work if you flood out. And you can replace the food in your freezer for the cost of a minimal generator.

In over 40 years living in the south east, I've never had a need for a generator. If it's that bad, you don't want to stay anyway. But if you really want one, wait 'til November when many of the people who bought them at hurricane time will be selling cheap.

I was serious about a generator. I wouldn't have a problem running it periodically (is that for the gasoline?). My plan was to go for propane.

But you have a very good point about the cost of a generator vs. the cost of replacing spoiled food, it’s not worth the trade off. Now cold beer and a hot shower…that’s another story.

I’ll have to give this some more thought. However, I still will sell my lawnmower and snow blower.

GO GATORS !!

I went to school in Gainesville - and as "Gators" we had alligators everywhere. All the small ponds on campus had 1 or 2 small to medium ones - mostly under 5 feet. The big ones were over in Lake Alice and bigger bodies of water. Don't confuse alligators with crocs. While big and scary most alligators don't really work for a living. They mostly do what that one in the picture is doing - sit. Crocs on the other hand will kill you. We used to chase alligators in lakes in my canoe - sneak up behind them - they just drop below the surface - none wanted to play.

I drove my C5 to work today. There - that was almost Off Topic...

My house is about 97% complete. I wish you much good luck with the project. I never want to do this again!!! It sounds like you won't be wearing the General Contractor hat so that should make it much easier for you.

I've found a small (2.5KW) Honda generator to be a big help during hurricanes. I put some fuel stabilizer in, run it every four months and have had no problems. About three minutes after you lose power you get bored, fire up the generator, plug in the refrigerator and TV and no more boredom. It doesn't use that much gas either.

Taylor Woodrow was our builder also and I was pretty pleased with their product. We also have an alligator in our back yard....he hasn't eaten any of the neighborhood kids yet.

Good luck!

We have a generator, bought it after hurricane Andrew. I run it about every 6 weeks and keep Sta-bil in the tank and change the gas every once in a while. It will run the fridge and microwave and some lights. Before a storm I fill several cans of gas, then use them in the truck after. My parents were glad to have a generator in Punta Gorda after hurricane Charlie shut their power off for 2 weeks.

Good luck with the construction. You might want to make a few more visits to the site before they are done - I speak from experience. Sometimes you just have to keep on the builders to get things right.
