If prices fall to much we are definently going to lose some of our exclusivity. I don't want any joker who could buy a honda buying a Vette and screwing it up for the rest of us. MHO

Are you kidding me? This is the attitude that kills perceptions of corvette owners. How many C5's did they make in the year you bought yours??? Reality check.

"Going" to lose exclusivity? That's been long gone, my friend:

I don't base my decisions on the thoughts of others. I won't and don't snob any vette owner, or really any other car for that matter. Almost all C6 owners don't wave at me, but I don't really care either. My wife and I get a chuckle out of it, but life goes on.
When you see a beater on the road do you think the guy intentionally banks rolls of fat cash and drives a beater because he wants to? Most times when I see a family traveling in a rusted out beater, I feel sorry for them, because I know its probably the best car they can afford.
It would not make me feel good to drive up along side them in hopes they stare at my "exclusivity."
Now if what you are talking about is that a honda guy gets his hands on a vette, throws a couple fart tips on it and a huge win, then ya, that will suck. But to each his own.
The C5s just got a year older. A showroom condition 2004 C5 coupe can be had for mid 30s where I live. The asking prices for some of the C5s here are laughable. 04 ZO6 with 10K miles for $46,000, 02 C5s for $35,000. Get real guys! These sellers need to look at the auction reports and swallow a good dose of reality.

Well they will now be dropping more than the regular depreciation that they have experienced since 97 simply for the fact that the next generation (C6) is now here.

that's assuming that the next generation is well liked. But I do know what you mean, though.
It seems some people were "iffy" on the new C6, but from what I have seen people are coming around. I think pretty much any time you have a long running succesful generation, whenevre the new one comes out you will have the people who just simply don't like change. People get used to the looks the way they have been and almost anything different will initially be a dissapointment. But thye C6 is still a Corvette and still a nice looking car and these people will come around like they always do. the C6 Z06...well there is nothing not to like about this car. It's hot as hell and performance wise it's a world beater at a relatively cheap price. To compete with it you have to spend 3X+ what it costs.

If that happens I'll have to step up to the new Z06.

How are they iffy? Won't a base '06 outperform an '04 Z06?

No base C6's have proven to be slower than 02-04 Z06's. Obviously the new C6 Z06 will outperform the previous Z06's, if thats what you meant. Anyhow, that wasn't what I was talking about. What I was pointing out is the fact that although some people weren't that crazy about the looks of the new vette, it seems they are coming around to liking it, which is the way it usually goes whenever you introduce a new generation of a long running succesful one. I was actually defending the new C6, not putting it down. I was just responding to Mike's comment when he said "well that's assuming the next generation is well liked." I was just making the point that I am sure it will be
Price compression occurs with virtually any vehicle with time, and, even more so along with the introduction of an upgraded model change. However, Corvettes are unique and do hold an amazing mystique, historical tradition and high performance esthetic in any automotive market (old or new).
In the final analysis, I am in total agreement with Steve (84zz4vette) whom has basically stated above that it really does not matter. Go and buy want you want and can afford, then, mod it to your hearts content. But, remember to be sure to enjoy it.
As long as GM keeps making Corvettes, the resale prices on the last generation will decline. Sure extremely low mileage and special edition models will bring higher prices, but in general they'll lose value. Dealers here are already offering '05 C6's for under $40K to move them out for the '06's.
When you could buy an '04 last Summer with GM discount and 0% financing for as much as $12K off MSRP, why would you pay more today for a similiar used Vette? Dealers can ask what ever they want, but what they'll finally take is the key.
I'm on my sixteenth new Corvette ( I've owned them since 1962), and I've seen a lot of Corvettes change hands through the years ..... there is no car that better fits the description..... "you get what you pay for."
Terry
SIXTEEN??? WOW!!! How do you keep track of them? Ok, now that I think aboutit, I can tell you all the cars I've owned in the last 26 years but... Sheesh!!
Sixteen!!
We should start a thread asking how many Vettes have you owned??

There are quite a few people on this forum who have owned more.
Many of my former Corvettes are shown on my Forum website if you're interested.
I love the cars and I've had the good fortune, by actual ownership, to witness many changes with Corvettes through the years. I would never have believed in 1962 they would evolve into the engineering masterpeice they are today. Dave Hill and his crew have done us all proud.......
Motor Trend's cover headline last month that stated " 'The 06 Z06 Corvette - Sell the Ferrari!!" sums up well what Dave Hill and GM have created for us....... Zora would be proud......
