You can hit the "Stinking Rose" right off of Broadway for some good food. There is also Bubba Gumps on Pier 39. You may be able to catch a Giants game while you're there. Check their schedule online.

Drive accross the Golden gate to Sausalido. The trip across the bridge is neat in itself and Sausalido has a bunch of restaurants and shops, if you are into that. Don't forget to see Napa Valley for the winery tours (and samples)...

Eat at Scoma's (at least once ). It's on the Warf.

Check out O'Farrels (without the wife, if you're married )

While you are over there drive up to Muir (sp) Woods and see the the giant redwoods. Also take a walking tour of Alcatraz. Kinda touristy, but cool just the same.

North Beach is SF's version of NYC's Little Italy- a must for a walk through, and 1 block over is Chinatown. Its a great City. Irish? Stop into O'Reilly's (on Green Street aka Beach Blanket Babylon ave) for a Guiness. (Maybe Miles has another huge Irish Wolfhound by now). You'll be right there. If you have a night and can road trip, drive up Hwy 50 to South Shore Lake Tahoe (7500 ft elevation). Tahoe is absolutely beautiful. You've never breathed air like that if you're from back east. Fun casino's too. 4 hours each way from downtown. If thats too far & you're into wine, drive to town of Sonoma (1 hour w/no traffic). Wine Country living at its best. Just over the Golden Gate from SF, exit for Sausalito, but drive up into the "headlands", which are the hills that overlook the bridge. More postcards are taken at this spot- looking over the GG bridge to the city. You're actually higher than the bridge spans! The view is surreal. Enjoy.

In addition to the above posts, the cable car museum is a must. I also recommend a walk up the tower for amazing views of the bay and city.( I can't think of the name of the tower but it is a common landmark in the city)

You've got to stop at the Buena Vista in Ghiradelli Sq. and get the best Irish coffee in the world. Think they invented it or so they say. Whatever it's terrific. Great atmosphere as well.

Coit Tower. You can get the best pictures of the Crookedest Street from up there. Which, by the way, is fun to drive down. Of course that is the definition of "touristy".

I agree ... you must eat at Scoma's

Also, when I was there we took a tour in a small van that crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and went first to Muir Woods, where we were able to get out and walk around for an hour or so. Then the van took us to Sausalito, where we got off, walked around the shops, had lunch at the Spinnaker Restuarant (great view and food), and then we took a ferry back to SF. Overall, that was the best day while we were there.

We also went to a baseball game, deep sea fishing (cold and rough), and of course you must take a trolley ride.

I've been there twice and loved it! You have to go to Alcatraz, Sausalito, Muir Woods, Stinson Beach (not far from the woods) Napa and or Sonoma for wine tasting. When in the Bay area you have to go to pier 39 and eat and see the seals...as one mentioned above the "Stinkin Rose" is cool (warning, its all about garlic!) Coit tower, China Town is a blast! as is the downtown Union Square area. It's also a must to ride the cable cars...you can take one from the pier area to downtown...most things are within walking distance (up and down those hills) go to the crooked street (Lumbard Street). oh, one word Ghirardelli! its up the hill from the pier area...absolutely the best chocolate!

There is also a Vista point (looking area) across the Golden Gate toward Sausalito that is cool for pictures...have fun! its nice country!

If you go a bit south to the Monterey/Carmel area, take the "17 Mile Drive" along Monterey Bay. If you are a golfer, stop by Pebble Beach Golf Club.

Here's an interactive map: http://www.pebblebeach.com/page.asp?id=1241

Buy a multi day pass and ride the cable cars, trolley cars and bus' to your hearts content. You can ride as much as you want and transfer from one line to another all day long. It's a great way to tour the city.

Take a ride to Japan town and enjoy the culture plus some great food. Go where the locals go, you'll enjoy it.

Try a train ride thru Nappa Valley and the wine country. The "Dinner Train" is fun and very pretty country to see.

If you like crabs, get a Dungeness Crab at Fishermans Warf.

I love San Francisco. Wish I was going with you. I was just there for July Fourth. Fantastic place.

Wow! Beautiful San Francisco is a Smorgas Bord of very scenic and restaurant delights. Fisherman's Wharf is a must see; take the Cable Car up Hyde Street; cruise (from Fisherman's Wharf) to Alcatraz Island; take a relaxing stroll across the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge (this stunning suspension bridge has been an historic landmark since opened in 1935); and, be sure to visit the newly remodeled and historic Cliff House Restaurant on Ocen Beach. Be safe and enjoy the sites.

Best Wishes,
Eden

Take the Commuter Ferry (near Pier 39) and sail across the bay to Tiburon. Takes about 20 minutes. Do this just before sunset and have dinner at Sam's on the wharf - about one block west of the Ferry Terminal in Tiburon. You won't regret it! Great views across the bay to SF and the food, wine and fresh sourdough bread are memorable to say the least. Make sure you make the last ferryboat back to the city or the cab ride could make the trip even more $$$$ memorable. Have a great trip to my favorite city in the world.
