This morning while driving my '98 6-speed I hit a rough patch on the road. As soon as I did the ABS and TCS lights came on the dash and the DIC started saying that both needed service. The mileage on the car was also 75250 exactly. Both my ABS and TCS was out indeed; wheels could lock up while braking and the rear end skidded. When I stopped the car I shut it off and restarted it. The lights were off and everything worked again. Is this something I should be worried about or have looked at? Was it just the jarring of the road that tripped something momentarily or is it set to go off at a certain mileage for regular maintenance?
This has happened to me several times. The errors always cleared after turning the car off and restarting. May be Microsoft had something to do with the software?
The last time this happened was about a year and a half to two years ago. At that time, the dealership suspected a loose connection on one of the sensors. I was told that I would have to bring it in with the warning lights on for them to diagnose the problem properly. Fortunately, I haven't had the oppertunity to do that.
I would say, unless it is a constant situation or you are near a dealership when it happens, just take the first chance to restart the system. From what I understand, there are no real detrimental effects. Those systems are just turned off while the warnings are present.
Thanks. Defintely does help. I drove it the rest of the day today and never had a problem. Hopefully just a freak thing that I can simply reset and go on.
Guys, this issue will not go away and if you are getting this code on your DIC, you are headed for trouble. It happened to me twice in two weeks last month and the last time the message came on it stayed on. When it stays on you do not have ABS or TC just your regular brakes. I took mine into the dealer and the fix is a $1200 replacement of the computer that controls both ABS and TC. My 02 has under 9000 miles and the warranty just expired in May but a few calls to GM got them to fix at no cost to me. Beware of the issue as it will only get worse and will have to be replaced down the line.
