..... I've got a '04 Coupe and ever since I had the car new (3,500 miles now), I've heard a "gravel, gravel, gravel" type sound upon start-up and also continuing on when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
I might add this is noticed when the hood is up, but I don't really hear it when the hood is closed or if I'm in the car or when I'm driving.
I've dismissed this sound as being normal because the car was new, but now I'm begining to wonder if this sound is normal. It almost sounds like a low pitched desiel at idle.
I must also add that this engine "has not" burned any oil since new and the car is an automatic trans. My driving is a combination of freeway and street. Sorry, I don't have any sounds bites to send.
I've had older V-8's before (69 & 70's) cars but have not heard that type of sound to my memory.
Has anyone else out there experienced the same thing? Is it normal or not? If not, then has anyone discovered what this gravel, gravel, gravel type sound is?

Is it an A4 or MN6... The MN6's have a sound similar to what you are discribing, but it is not the engine, it's the throwout bearing. Get in and put the clutch in, if it goes away, or is greatly reduced, than thats your sound.
I have a 00 A4 and when I first bought the car 3 years ago with 25k on the clock I was always concerned when I first started it from cold. There was always a dull knocking or rattle coming from the engine till the car was at normal operating temp, then it's gone! Now at 40k it's just the same and no worse in fact a friend of mine has an A4 with just 8k on the clock and it sounds exactly the same as mine when it starts up. Now I've heard that, I know it's nothing to worry about. In fact I feel quite good about it!
Was that after they cured the column lock? Actually they did attempt to fix the piston slap but I have heard people still complain about it in later years.

Got the same thing in my 2000 and it is piston slap, but I don't know what to make of the "gravel, gravel" sound. The throwout bearing is a good guess.
