Default Shifter - Modified Or Aftermarket

Does Anyone Know What Is The Advantage To Buying A B&m Or Hurst Shifter As Opposed To Modifying The Stock To Be Lower?

If It Matters - I Have An 02 Z06

Thanks!

Electron

There are so many previous posts and discussions on this subject I would suggest doing a search.

This is one of those subjects that never goes away and continues to reappear every two months it seems.

But to answer the question quickly, one's a bolt-in mod and the other's a lot of work modifying the shaft. I have the aftermarket.

I chose the Breathless Performance Products shifter. I like it over the stock unit for a number of reasons. First of all is the feel of the new shifter...it is not the rowboat, mile between gears feel of the stock unit. It is precise and just clicks into gear...the 2nd to 3rd shift is effortless. The BPP unit does require a bit more effort than the stock unit, but I got used to it quickly.

I like a short throw between gears and the confident feel that the aftermarket shifter gives me. One of the big reasons I chose the BPP shifter is because it has 16 different possible positions in which it can be mounted. It also comes with different strength springs so that you can customize the shifter's movement to your liking.

If you choose to modify the stock shifter, you are only shortening the unit, not adjusting it's feel or changing it's precision.

It really depends on your own preference, but if you have any performance background or racing experience, you will most likely prefer the aftermarket unit.

The only drawback of the aftermarket shifter is that they tend to be noisier than the stock unit because they don't have the rubber isolater that the stock one has. However, the isolater not only isolates the noise, it also isolates good shifting feel! I can do without it.

Hope this helps your decision making process!

I've driven both. Both have their place and can be satisfying in different ways, so it boils down to your needs and tastes. Try and find some local Corvette buddies and arrange some test drives.

I have a Hurst and love it.

Good luck

Tom

This quote is NOT at all correct.

"If you choose to modify the stock shifter, you are only shortening the unit, not adjusting it's feel or changing it's precision."

If you do the following mod you will see a tremendous difference

http://benelliwang.badassride.com/Shifter/index.html

It is not really that much work. I liked it much better than the Hurst that I installed. However I later came across a B&M at such a low price I couldn't pass up trying. I installed that an loved it. But it sat too tall so I cut off about 1 1/2 inches and rethreaded. Now it is exactly what the Z06 should have been in the first place.

I do note however that the modified stock shifter is still smoother than the modified B&M. But the throw is longer/

Not to be contentious or anything, but I reiterate that the modifying the stock shifter doesn't change anything but it's length. Now understandably the shorter shifter will respond differently, but the only thing the mod does is shorten it. Nothing is done to change how the shifter works mechanically. It doesn't get stiffer springs or have it's isolater removed, it's overall construction is not changed...it's just shorter. That's what I meant.

Again, being shorter does make a difference in the way the shifter feels under action and it can't help but be an improvement over it's original state, but the aftermarket shifters are made generally to be more precise in their movement than the stock unit. The fulcrum point is different which makes the aftermarket shifters feel and work entirely differently than the stock shifter.

I agree we don't want to be contentious just helpful However the mod that is detailed in the url I supplied does change the shifter. In the process the rubber isolater is removed and it makes all the difference in the world. One of the biggest complaints about the stock shifter is the rubbery feeling. This mod removes most of that rubberiness. OK I realize there probably is no such word as rubberiness but you know what I mean.
