I checked the service records for my newly acquired Z. It shows a recall for the bolts and washers but not for the column lock.
Do I need to disable the column lock with a bypass or has it been fixed on later 04's.
thanks

Get the CLB, mine started acting up and it can happen on any C5. Chris @ ECS has them in stock and I installed mine a few days ago. My solenoid was sounding very weak and the pull key message came on a few times and the wheel did lock. Luckly I was able to get it unlocked so I could get her out of the tight garage I have, almost need lambo doors it is so tight. Need to buy a new house I guess.
Got in the car to go to my sisters house to program her DVR(She's in Hawaii) Car stalls, I think, OK....fire it, stalls again. I look down, PULL KEY, WAIT 10 SECS(S***!) I thought. Waited a bit....fired it, fine. One SCARY moment. I will call Chris tomorrow and order one.
Why couldn't GM resolve this? it happened since 1997
I just installed a CLB kit on my 2002 Z06 last week. It took me about 45 minutes and was really no problem. I thought I was pushing my luck so I put it in. It works great. My friend has a 1999 and he had never had a problem with it. Then 3 weeks ago, it finally happened to him. He had to have his car towed and they scratched the front end getting it on the truck. The dealer kept his car 12 days to fix it. I told him it could happen again any time, even after they fixed it. I told him if he ordered a CLB kit, I would put it in for him since I am now an "expert", having installed one on my own car. He ordered it yesterday.
I have an '02 Z. A few of weeks ago my column lock (CL) starting acting up. "Pull key 10 seconds and wait" crap started and I dealt with it. The first time it actually locked the steering wheel was Labor Day weekend at my parents house when I started it up to drive home. I read a post where it said to "forcefully" move the steering wheel side to side to move the CL. I also read a post explaining that possible low voltage conditions at s/u can cause the "anti-theft" circuitry to detect the problem and lock the steering wheel. Therefore, I changed out the AC Delco battery with an Optima Redtop. Since the changeout, I had one reoccurrence the first day and nothing since. If the CL gives you fits, "forcefully" move the steering wheel back and forth to move the CL around and then start the car back up to make the CL dissengage. So far this has worked for me.
