You might try changing to a synthetic transmission fluid such as AMSOIL ATF (which does meet GM Dexron III requirements) and seeing if that helps.

I bought my 01 Z06 with low mileage and it did shift harder than what I was use to. I have no idea if an aftermarket shifter was installed. After about a year I stopped noticing it. Either is truly loosened up with more use or my arm got stronger. I think I prefer the feel more. I drove a 05 S2000 and I get the impression that the gear shifter can be moved into the next gear by just flicking it with your finger.
