Default C5 navigation

Hey guys whats up. I have a 2001 C5 vert, and my speakers and sound system have enough power for me. But i can;t stand the stock head unit, i think its so cheasy. I really like the in dash screen like the eclipse ones because they look factory. My qestion is how hard are they to install? I dont need to change speakers or anything like that, just the head unit. Also, how does the navigation work on it? just a cd?? also, why wont the nav/screens from the tahoes, trailblazers, c6's work in our c5's. i would assume they are a direct bolt in?? Thankyou, all info is apreciated!

You might want to contact scott_fx. I think he was in the process of fabricating a double-din console that might work with some aftermarket navigation systems. He's also pretty knowledgeable and very helpful.
Also check out the audio section because a few other knowledgeable people hang out there. I wish I could remember their names.

I looked into it about a year ago....unless youre willing to go with one of the single DIN flip out screens.....or youre willing to spend major cash for a custom install, youre outta luck. In order to mount a unit like the Kenwood or Alpine Nav units with their 7 inch screens, you need to relocate the HVAC control to where the ash tray is, and have someone tear apart your center console section and then fiberglass it back together so that it looks right. Its a whole lot of work and a whole lot more money. I decided to take the cash and spend it on headers, a cam, and tires....but thats just me. I have a coupel pics of some real clean installs, and some of some not so clean installs to give you an idea of what you might be getting into. Shoot me an email at GPaules03@hotmail.com and Ill send em to you. Good luck!!

FlyNavy30,
You dont have to do anything to the climate controls they can stay exactly where they are. Who told you that?

Here is a pic of my Avic-D1 two DIN install. The Pioneer looks more factory in my opinion than the Eclipse (it doesnt have all that tacky aluminum looking stuff on it). Install required some dremeling of bezel to fit it properly but overall was not to bad. If done properly the unit looks like it was made to be there. I love mine!

Very cool install.

Does that unit fit if you have the dual zone electronic climate control?

You will need to dremel the top and bottom cross bars since the 2 DIN units are taller than the stock 1.5 DIN slot. I ended up filling in my gaps with a black insulation type foam tape that has a very similar texture and color as the plastic dash trim piece. For now it looks fine until I feel like actually bondoing the piece to fit the radio perfectly. Then I will send it out to get re-coated in the original "leather look" finish. Surprisingly it looks fine as is though. Unfortunately I dont have any clear day pics of it as is now but will get some soon. Turned out really well though.

JT

P.S. the dual zone a/c unit is identical size as the manual controls. No different.

Heres a good thread showing what I and others have done recently. you CAN get a double din to work with MINOR trim work... end result is nice. I think most of us are still looking to modify the trim piece more but none the less here you go. And yes the Nav simply works off of a cd
